About this listen
It was while holding aloft a not altogether pleasant-smelling mackerel that the decision was made. The March rain hammered on the rotting tin roof high above the market stall, where I had spent the last six months pushing out dubious trays of marine life at three for a fiver. After a two-week holiday in Tenerife, Joy and I vowed that a life in fish giblets was not going to be our destiny and a life in the sun, was. A complete lack of catering experience, zero business acumen, and the sum of our vastly wealth barely reaching waist level of a ceramic pig did little to deter our enthusiasm for buying a bar. "Where do we sign?" we replied. And then the whole silly, sunny saga began....
When Joe and his girlfriend Joy decide to trade in their life on a cold Lancashire fish market to run a bar in the Tenerife sunshine, they anticipate a paradise of sea, sand, and siestas. Little did they expect their foreign fantasy to turn out to be about as exotic as Bolton on a wet Monday morning.
Amidst a host of eccentric locals, homesickness, and the occasional cockroach infestation, pint-pulling novices Joe and Joy struggle with "Brits abroad" culture and learn that, although the skies might be bluer, the grass is definitely not always greener. A hilarious insight into the wild and wacky characters of an expat community in a familiar holiday destination, More Ketchup Than Salsa is a must-listen for anybody who has ever dreamed about jetting off to sunnier climes, finding a job abroad...or anybody who has even momentarily flirted with the idea of "doing a Shirley Valentine" in these trying economic times.

Grinding...
Good stories and some quite clever writing but the narration is so strained and dull.
Gave it up after 3 hours.

Excellent listen - can't wait for the Sequel
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I'd recommend this book as something a little different - not quite travel writing, not a dry autobiography, not a naughty chef memoir but a humorous observation of ex-pats in a British bar and the trials and tribulations of running said bar in a foreign land.
Any additional comments?
Essential reading for anyone like me who is obsessed with A Place in the Sum and Bargain Brits in Benidorm. The dream lifestyle in the sum may be not all its cracked up to be after all - this is the perfect antidote to my sun-drenched dreams of a better life.

Fantastic Listen!
I had already had the joy of reading this hilarious book and it's successor from the wonderful Joe Cawley, I am pleased to say it is as equally a brilliant and enjoyable listen! Totally charming story which will have you hooked from Chapter 1. Genuine laugh out loud moments where you will feel for the characters and truly relate. Wonderfully told and made all the more special by being a true tale! Highly recommend this to anyone looking for some great light hearted easy and engaging listening! Well worth it. :)

Good and entertaining!
Narrator is good in this book as well. His tones and mannerisms ( so to speak) add to the entertainment.
I read the book previously a few years ago and listened to it this time driving about. Its funny and you feel for them with all the cock ups and struggles. Worth the money

A joy to listen to!
Any additional comments?
I've read both of Joe's books and found them a joy from start to finish, Very honest as well as very funny. This is my first audio book and a big step for me. I now find I have the odd hour where I have the time to get myself lost in an audio book. 10 hours was, I felt, a big commitment. Wrong!! time just flew by and I found myself at the end!
It was fascinating reliving a story I knew well but read to me in the correct accent. The choice of narrator was genius.
I await the second instalment as an audio book, a must please Joe!!
I did hear that there may be a TV version at some stage, this would transfer to that format well and I hope it happens.
Come on Joe, get the second book into audio and where is the third!!

Superb - funny - and so accurate!
Having lived in Tenerife for many years - and at the same era this book portrays - I could relate so easily to the events and stories told in this entertaining book. If you have ever lived in Spain this book is not to be missed. The narration is amusing - and so accurate - I laughed out loud throughout and so would any listener to this terrific story. I cannot wait to read the follow-up - brilliant from start to finish!

What an adventure
I have thoroughly enjoyed the exploits during the first six months of Joe's time as a barman in Tenerife. The adventures were interesting and made the story one that is not easy to stop listening too. Like many we have been to many a similar bar and perhaps been not dissimilar to there customers.
Loved it, loved it, loved it and really enjoyed listening instead of reading
