Summary
Mongrel, a creature more wolf than man, leads a lonely life on the fringes of pack society—until the night a handsome vampire shows up with a mysterious request.
Bowie, a vampire cursed to a life of endless nights, maintains close ties with his human family. When young girls in their village go missing, he must act quickly. But to find them, he’ll need to convince the local werewolf pack to loan him their best tracker—a wolf known as the Mongrel.
Though he hates the slur, Andras is used to being called Mongrel. When Bowie refuses to refer to him by anything but his given name, Andras can’t help a flicker of unexpected trust toward the stranger. He volunteers to help Bowie, risking banishment.
Can two tenderhearted men overcome their traumatic pasts and work together to rescue the girls before it’s too late? Or will the world’s most prolific killer snuff the flames of their passion along with the lives of the captives?
***This steamy love story spans the country of Hungary as Andras and Bowie journey through cities and wilderness on their quest to right a villain’s wicked wrongs. Mongrel features a sweetly possessive werewolf, a cinnamon roll of a vampire, and the worst killer in history. A surprisingly fluffy MM Paranormal/Historical Romance considering the subject matter.
HEA guaranteed with loads of laughs along the way and no cliffhanger ending!

Mongrel
Ok listen, didn’t rock my boat as it was predicable and lacking in action for me. But if you want sweet warm and cuddly and something to pass a couple of rainy afternoons you could do worse.

Good
It was good and I enjoyed it. Nothing incredible but a pleasant read nonetheless.
The narrator who was new-to-me did a very good job tough!

Engaging and entertaining
Mongrel by Lee Colgin is an engaging and entertaining story, although the action was rather slow-paced until the end. It seemed more focused on the growth of Andras (the Mongrel), as he learns more about the world outside his pack. I enjoyed watching him grow in confidence and self-worth, guided by the sweet and supportive Bowie. The MCs are well-developed and likeable, and although the missing girls seemed to take a backseat to the development of Andras and Bowie's relationship, I was invested in their recovery and seeing what would happen. One thing I would have enjoyed would have been seeing Andras return to his pack and give them all the proverbial 'finger' before going to live with Bowie, but I am satisfied with the ending. The history lesson (afterward) at the end regarding the true story behind the villainous Countess was fascinating as well.
The narration was entertaining, and Tom did a fantastic job of giving each character a distinct and distinguishable voice.
I received a free copy of the audiobook and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Enjoyed listening, enjoyed the story
I was thrilled to see that Mongrel was coming to audio! I had enjoyed reading it - the story blended real history with fiction, which definitely appealed to the history buff in me.
The story (and romance between) of Bowie and Andras was really sweet. Bowie saw past the anomaly of Andras, (hence the name Mongrel). There lots of dashes of humour, sometimes a pinch (very small) of sadness, but overall, it's a found/made family, romance, mystery and history lesson all in a very interesting book.
The narrator is new to me and I think he held his own with his performance. I liked his timbre, characterisation and cadence. Made revisiting the story a good time. I look forward to listening to him do the rest of the series.
Really enjoyed it!

Vampires, werewolves, and Hungarian history
Andras and Bowie's story was a unique blend of paranormal romance and Hungarian history, and I really enjoyed listening along as Tom Zadoyko narrated their journey. As werewolf and vampire, Andras and Bowie wouldn't normally have crossed paths, but with a serial kidnapper on the loose and Bowie in need of a tracker to hunt them down, they made the perfect team. Andras wasn't particularly motivated to stay with his werewolf pack after being treated like an outcast since birth, and whether or not he realized it he was deeply lonely and craving companionship. Bowie was an absolute sweetheart of a vampire and the perfect man to show Andras how he deserved to be treated, and as the two of them set out on their quest I was excited to see if their chemistry would develop into something more.
What started as slower paced clue-hunting and trail scenting turned into a more frantic mission after one of Bowie's beloved family members was taken. I felt the urgency driving both men to the brink of exhaustion, and somehow even in the midst of their stress and fear they still turned to each other for comfort and support. Their growing romance was the one bright spot in an otherwise grueling chase, and I soaked up their sweet affection as much as I could. Bowie and Andras were totally adorable together, and it made me really happy to see the love growing between them as their many days together turned steamier and steamier. I found it easy to stay engaged in the storyline as Bowie and Andras trekked from town to town, and they met a lot of interesting individuals along the way. Everything was building up to the moment they found the location of the kidnapper, and their rescue mission was not as easy as Bowie and Andras had hoped it'd be. I thought the pacing of the entire book was spot-on, building up slowly enough that I wasn't overwhelmed with all the details and then turning up the urgency so that the stakes felt really high by the time they reached their final destination. Similarly, I thought the romance built to a natural and satisfying conclusion, and by the time Bowie and Andras were confessing their love I felt like they had a rock solid foundation. All in all I couldn't have asked for a happier sendoff for this couple, and I'm adding the rest of the series to my TBR so I can see what happens next!

very enjoyable
Really enjoyable narration, in particular the voice used for Bowie.
Story - interesting choice in time period and very appealing MCs. I really liked the magic/supernatural parts of the world building and the plot ideas. However, if someone writes about a specific period, it would feel better with a bit more accuracy. I know it's fiction, but some parts just didn't make sense. After the struggle Andras had to get away from his pack initially it felt a bit odd that they were never heard from again.

Wonderful characters
A new series from Lee Colgin is always a treat and this one has started out exceptionally well. I came to this book for the mystery, but what held me was the relationship between Andras and Bowie. The respect Bowie shows Andras right from the beginning and his refusal to use the nickname bestowed on Andras by the pack won my heart. I loved seeing them work together to find out what happened to the girls and who was responsible. This had its dark, creepy moments, but the romance was surprisingly sweet and touching. Tom Zadoyko is a new narrator for me and I enjoyed his performance here very much. He captured the emotions of the characters well. I look forward to hearing more of his performances.

Fantastic start to the series!
Wow, what an amazing book! I loved every minute! I usually don't read historical books but this one hooked me from the first chapter and I couldn't put it down! The historical setting combined with the paranormal romance and the suspense storyline was just perfect. The pacing and the writing were wonderful.
I adored Bowie and Andras. I loved them as people and I loved them as a couple too. They were absolutely adorable together. I really liked how loving and caring Bowie was and Andras was the sweetest most precious character. I wanted to hug him and keep him safe. I fell I'm love with them and their happy ending warmed my heart.
The narrator was fantastic, I loved how he voiced Andras and Bowie and all the side characters. The audiobook had great quality.
I loved it, I really want to read the rest of the books in the series. I'm super intrigued.

For a book that has such dark themes....
This sure was a sweet romance! I just loved Bowie and Andras and thought they worked so well together. I can definitely see why Colgin decided to call this series "Outcast Mates" because these were definitely Outcasts, but it made it all the more sweeter that they found each other. I loved the worldbuilding and thriller-ish mystery. Definitely hooks you from the beggining, especially with Zadoyko's narration!
