About this listen

Vince finds himself going up in the underworld, but the mafia is far from the only gang in town.

The city is abuzz with an international sorcerer's conference, and the mayor is cracking down hard on anything that might make him look bad. But Vince is out to get that bag. That means fulfilling his enforcer contract for the mob, police crackdown be damned.

Other powers in the underworld aren't sleeping either. Vince still has a vampire assassin after his head, his enemy's powerful backers don't appreciate losing territory, and there's a new player on the prowl with an interest in the Lionetti Family.

Oh, and Vince's girlfriend and the mafia don's sister have some seriously bad blood between them. Might want to sort that out before they literally tear him in half while fighting.

excellent as usual

a sequel that really expands the intrigue and plot of the original. in the first book it felt like not a lot happened. in this one SO MUCH happens. Vince is a great everyman, not Uber powerful and has to come up with imaginative solutions. however I think that is going to be really tested considering the level of threat that keeps expanding. at times he comes across as frustratingly obstinate and lacking any ambition, reactive and not proactive. the story happens TO him and he only drives elements of it.

the good thing is that the supporting cast are very likeable and engaging, with Vince SOMEHOW gaining their affection in spite of his passivity and odd approaches. he needs to swallow some pride and tack the cash he keeps claiming to want. plus his girlfriend is right - he's naive and doesn't think things through.

the harem element is VERY slow burn, so don't expect the same level as Heretic Spellblade or others in the genre. it's nice that there's more focus on the romance buildup but gosh if only things could be a bit speedier.

those are just minor quibbles - the setting is a fantastic urban fantasy, the battles tense, the dialogue sharp. excellent writing and Stephanie does a fabulous job bringing everyone to life.

Book 2!!

A definite improvement on Book 1.
Vince character is improving as is he magic. Every new character we meet has their own agenda. Some seem to be allies but just as easily be villains.
looking forward to book 3
