About this listen

Misery Chastain was dead. Paul Sheldon had just killed her - with relief, with joy. Misery had made him rich; she was the heroine of a string of best sellers. And now he wanted to get on to some real writing.

That's when the car accident happened, and he woke up in pain in a strange bed. But it wasn't the hospital.

Annie Wilkes had pulled him from the wreck, brought him to her remote mountain home, splinted and set his mangled legs. The good news was that Annie was a nurse and had painkilling drugs. The bad news was that she was Paul's Number One Fan. And when she found out what Paul had done to Misery, she didn't like it. She didn't like it at all. And now he had to bring Misery back to life. Or else....

favourite author with excellent narration

a great King story, (so much better than the film), with excellent gripping narration, i usually take a while to adjust to the narrators style but this was so natural and a perfect fit to the story that it took no adjustment at all- one of the best so far. Character voices were consistent, great sound quality, and there were no obvious breaks and no speech quirks to notice. sometimes, in other stories, i got the impression the narrator had been in a different mood on different days of recording, but here the reading was as though it had been done all in one. I usually prefer longer stories, so this ended sooner than i would have liked, but thats because I miss the characters when the book ends- the length suits the story perfectly. Highly recommended.

Chilling

I thought the movie was scary, but listening to it, wow. Stephen king is my favorite author since I was a teenager. I wish I could afford all his audio books cos it getting harder for me to read. 10 stars in my opinion

intense

A brilliant psychological thriller. Stephen King at his grisly best. A tough listen at times because of the level of violence but fantastic narration.

Fantastic

I've always preferred Kings short stories and often struggled with his novels, but finally giving this one a go has made me realise I might be wrong.

Also, a top drawer narration, that really pulls you in.

Highest of recommendations.

Stephen King at his best

I love this book. When I read it 10 years ago, it had me on the edge of my seat. The audible version is just as good. The narrator may sound a little flat at the start, but she really brings the characters to life and makes the book flow well.

Vintage King

Great stuff very enjoyable. my favourite era of Kings work (between 79 and 90 roughly). narration was a bit patchy in places but it's worth it for how well she does Annie Wilkes.

One of King's best

This is without a doubt one of King's best works. It's a fast paced horror thriller with a great antagonist, made stronger and more compelling by the fact that it is a masterclass in writing. It contains some of the most intense moments in the entire King catalogue. The protagonist, Paul us a writer, and as such, King weaves into the story several insights into his own writing process, elevating the book from beyond fiction and into the genre of education as well. There is a sense that there may be more truth to this story than one would like to imagine. Can you?
