About this listen

WINNER OF THE MAN BOOKER PRIZE 2018

'Milkman is extraordinary. I've been reading passages aloud for the pleasure of hearing it. It's frightening, hilarious, wily and joyous all at the same time.' - Lisa McInerney, author of The Glorious Heresies

In this unnamed city, to be interesting is dangerous. Middle sister, our protagonist, is busy attempting to keep her mother from discovering her maybe-boyfriend and to keep everyone in the dark about her encounter with Milkman. But when first brother-in-law sniffs out her struggle, and rumours start to swell, middle sister becomes 'interesting'. The last thing she ever wanted to be. To be interesting is to be noticed and to be noticed is dangerous.

Milkman is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness. It is the story of inaction with enormous consequences.

At first I found it hard to read due to how it’s written but as I got into it I was transported into the mind and thoughts of middle sister and I loved it.

So much to love about this book: the characterisations, the verbosity, the styling (nothing was named but everything and everyone was identified and identifiable), the madness of the scrapes third sister was caught up in, the background of sectarian activities. And - again and again - the characterisations, so subtle but so brilliantly, fully formed.

The narration was IMPECCABLE, this book is fully brought to life by the narrator; those that have read - not listened to - it will have had a hollow experience, compared.

That said, there were times when I thought about giving up and not finishing. I can't put my finger on why, it felt like whilst I was wildly entertained I was also somewhat bored.

I want to tell everyone to listen to this audiobook but not sure I'd be widely thanked for recommending it.

Bleak and hilarious throughout

This is the best book I've listened to all year. Beautifully poignant with superb narration. I didn't want to finish and treasure the times in my car when I could listen uninterrupted. Full of different and evocative themes, really depicting what it must have been like to live at that time in Northern Ireland. The characters were so well drawn and brought to life. I loved this book but I definitely think it is one to listen to rather than read. Friend have said that they have struggled with the structure and lack of punctuation, not evident in the spoken word.

I could listen to Brid Brennan voice all day long! What an incredible, insightful, witty book by Anna Burns brought completely alive by Brid Brennan! Both author and narrator have made reading this book the most wonderful experience. I’m so sad I’ve finished it!!
Spectacular, thank you.

Loved the voiceover. Great pacing. Totally immersed in her world for the past 2 days.

Burns has written a sweetly compelling narrator, purely, I think, through voice. it is handled so well and with such poetry I am not surprised Milkman won the Man Booker prize.

Brid Brennan's reading is a virtuoso performance.

And here's me not really willing to give it the time of day as well.

I'll be buying the paperback next, and looking forward to it, too.

What a compelling voice!

Sometimes prizewinning novels are too literary for enjoyment, but not this one. The book is beautifully written and so well narrated...very cleverly put together with lots of digressions, but they weren't in the least annoying! The only disappointment was getting to the end!

Astonishingly good

A slow starter that was well worth the effort. A book I will not forget.
