About this listen
In the past five years, Israel has mounted three major assaults on the 1.8 million Palestinians trapped behind its blockade of the Gaza Strip. Taken together, Operation Cast Lead (2008-9), Operation Pillar of Defense (2012), and Operation Protective Edge (2014) have resulted in the deaths of some 3,700 Palestinians. Meanwhile a total of 90 Israelis were killed in the invasions. On the face of it, this succession of vastly disproportionate attacks has often seemed frenzied and pathological. Senior Israeli politicians have not discouraged such perceptions; indeed, they have actively encouraged them. After the 2008-9 assault, Israel's then-foreign minister, Tzipi Livni, boasted, "Israel demonstrated real hooliganism during the course of the recent operation, which I demanded." However, as Norman G. Finkelstein sets out in this concise, paradigm-shifting new book, a closer examination of Israel's motives reveals a state whose repeated recourse to savage war is far from irrational. Rather, Israel's attacks have been designed to sabotage the possibility of a peace compromise with the Palestinians, even on terms that are favorable to it. Looking also at machinations around the 2009 UN-sponsored Goldstone report and Turkey's forlorn attempt to seek redress in the UN for the killing of its citizens in the 2010 attack on the Gaza freedom flotilla, Finkelstein documents how Israel has repeatedly eluded accountability for what are now widely recognized as war crimes. Further, he shows that, though neither side can claim clear victory in these conflicts, the ensuing stalemate remains much more tolerable for Israelis than for the beleaguered citizens of Gaza. A strategy of mass nonviolent protest might, he contends, hold more promise for a Palestinian victory than military resistance, however brave.

Eye opening
Norman Finkelstein does what he does best; tells the truth about the occupation of Palestine by Israel. This is a must read for anyone who feels like they need a better understanding from an objective point of view.
I would have loved it if they chose a better narrator. It seems that all academic and religious texts are required to be read in monotones by whoever produces the audio versions.

Everyone who wants to understand 7 October must read this book
I listened to Dr Finkelstein’s interviews and decided to read all his books. I wish there were more writers like him and more people read his books. It is an eye opening book to understand the plight of Palestinians. It is incredible that this kind of treatment of human beings can go on nowadays. Highly recommended

Unbiased to the point based of facts.
I would recommend this to someone who wants to get an unbiased view on what has taken place in Palestine.

Eye Opening
I started reading this in 2023 after October 7 to get a background on the constant Gaza-Israel violence. Unlike others in the media, I knew there was historical background to Hamas’s terrorist attack but we never get a full picture of the conflict from the media. Here Norman, with characteristic eye for detail, surveyed the major assaults on Gaza highlighting the war crimes committed and how Israel has sought to derail any movement towards peace especially since Hamas took over the strip in 2006. When it comes to Gaza, Israel does what it want with endless impunity and Hamas thinks that violent resistant is the only way. I hope we, as a global community, can intervene to end this endless cycle of violence.

Very well argued legal analysis of recent events in the Palestine-Israel "conflict"
Brilliantly argued, convincing, legally indisputable, and all-round wonderful! Thank you for laying out the facts so clearly

Useful info for understanding current situation
No waffle. To the point. The thing that breaks my heart is that, after the publication of this book, Palestinians in Gaza did attempt the very strategy suggested. Unfortunately the world stood by AGAIN and let civilians, including children, get shot by the IDF 💔

Poking the big bear with a little stick then wondering why it eats you!
Paints a disturbing picture of the day to day life of modern day Gazans in the occupied Gaza strip. Doesn't adequately explain why Hamas continues to fire crude rockets into Israel whilst the youth throw stones at security forces. Whilst Israel's response is disproportionate whichever way you look at it, the big question for me is, why do Gazans continually goad Israel knowing full well what the response will be! Bizarre & suicidal behaviour and as per usual, it's children who suffer most!

Facts and fair. Valid 10 years ago and still valid today
We are very lucky to have political writers like Norman. Sometimes the media distorts the facts and change history. We all need a reference to keep coming to which list historical facts as they are.
