About this listen
2012 marks the 60th Anniversary of the publication of C.S.Lewis’s classic, Mere Christianity. Having sold over half a million copies in the UK alone, his overview of Christianity has been imitated many time, but never bettered.
One of the most popular and beloved introductions to the concept of faith ever written, Mere Christianity has sold millions of copies worldwide.
The book brings together C.S. Lewis’s legendary radio broadcasts during the war years, in which he set out simply to ‘explain and defend the belief that has been common to nearly all Christians at all times’. A brilliant collection, the book remains strikingly fresh for the modern reader and at the same time confirms C. S. Lewis’s reputation as one of the leading writer and thinkers of our age.
Rejecting the boundaries that divide Christianity’s many denominations, Mere Christianity provides an unequalled opportunity for believers and nonbelievers alike to absorb a powerful, rational case for the Christian faith. This scintiallating collection confirms C.S. Lewis’s reputation as one of the leading writers and thinkers of our age.

“He has quite a unique power for making theology an attractive, exciting and fascinating quest.” Times Literary Supplement
“Lewis seeks in Mere Christianity to help us see religion with fresh eyes, as a radical faith whose adherents might be likened to an underground group gathering in a war zone, a place where evil seems to have the upper hand, to hear messages of hope from the other side.” Kathleen Norris

Brilliant
As inspirational and challenging as all of his books, C.S. Lewis cuts to the sometimes uncomfortably uncompromising crux of Christianity in its truest form

I'm inspired to be a better man
It has opened my eyes on particular things. It has reinforced my determination to do better. He wasn't of my faith, but I believe he was true to himself and God. And he has inspired me by his insights which although I would not have thought myself unlearned I found these insights profound and I believe inspired by God to share with us all in a beautiful way.

Mere Christianity is a great introduction.
Mere Christianity is a great introduction to anybody wishing to explore what it is to be a christian. Lewis writes with a clear and uncluttered style helping the reader/listener to grasp some fundamental ideas within christianity.

A must read
Would you consider the audio edition of Mere Christianity to be better than the print version?
I have listen to it whilst doing almost anything i.e. walking to catch the train.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Mere Christianity?
The whole book is really good, however when Lewis gives examples they are even more memorable.
Which character – as performed by Geoffrey Howard – was your favourite?
This book is not character based.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I know that sounds a bit cheesy but most of the book is moving, however for the sake of the review, the example of god is like a father who is happy with his son's first faltering steps but will not be satisfied with anything less than strong strides when his son grows. God is easy to please and hard to satisfy.
Any additional comments?
This book is a must read for any Christian or anyone who wants to understand more of what Christianity is about. It is a bit old but does a great job.

A life changing experience!
I love it!
Geoffrey Howard is a very competent narrator and this book is the most elucidative book (about christianity) I've read.
The audio version made the book more enjoyable.

Deep, but easy to follow
CS Lewis pulls apart and examines the Christian experience with a deft and uncompromising style. the book is conversational and easy to follow, but does not lack depth or shy away from difficult subjects. Some of the language and analogies are slightly dated, however the fact that those points stand out shows just how much the deeper ideas are still so relevant. I highly recommend this for new and long time Christians, but also non-christians looking to understand their Christian friends and colleagues.

Grace
Rather than my reviewing the book I feel that it has reviewed me and introduced to me aspects of the Christian faith that had escaped me. I used to have my suspicions of C S Lewis . Now I will turn those suspicions upon myself and am glad to do so. I will in due time listen again to this book. Allow the first reading to sink in as it were and then to revisit it to hear what I failed to hear the first time .
What to me was the distinctive of this book was the direction it took in its constancy of leading the mind and heart to Christ without sentiment but with that sincere desire to exalt Christ to the readers need of Him above all things beside.
