Knowledge, empathy, and practical advice

This book is a treasure trove of wisdom, filled with practical strategies that are both tested and successful. It's not just a guide; it's a journey into understanding the complex world of teen athletes. Harris’s approach to setting realistic goals, effective coaching, and especially her nuanced communication techniques for the challenging teen years, are invaluable.

What sets this book apart is its comprehensive coverage of both mental and physical aspects, including the often-overlooked area of nutrition. The insight into the delicate balance between being a coach and a parent is enlightening, offering a fresh perspective that many other books miss. Comprehensive Expert Resource for Parents

L.D. Harris, an expert in nutrition who works with college athletes and is a parent of a D1 athlete, has provided this thorough overview of all aspects of setting up a teen athlete for success. I love that (as the title suggests) the book prominently addresses mental health, which Harris emphasizes is as important as physical health. The first chapter on this topic focuses on resilience, dealing with setbacks, reasons that teen athletes can suffer from anxiety and depression, and practical steps on what parents can do to help their children become self-aware and have a positive attitude. Later chapters provide clear and essential advice on developing and maintaining mental toughness with the ability to “leave it on the field,” setting realistic goals and subgoals, and dealing productively with challenges (not just atheltic but academic and social).

Of course, Harris does not ignore the physical side, focusing extensively on nutrition and training. With respect to nutrition, the author goes into great detail about the ins and outs of a balanced diet, what should (and should not) be included in such a diet, and the roles that sleep and supplements play. The author also discusses developing an individual-specific physical training plan that involves an appropriate mix of cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, muscle strength, and body composition.

On top of all that, Harris helps parents understand the respective yet sometimes overlapping roles of parent and coach. Parents are reminded to be supportive through thick and thin, while also knowing when to keep quiet and defer to the coach.
