Summary

Ever dreamed of starting over?

Issy Randall can bake. No, more than that - Issy can create stunning, mouth-wateringly divine cakes. After a childhood spent in her beloved Grampa Joe’s bakery, she has undoubtedly inherited his talent. So when she’s made redundant from her safe but dull City job, Issy decides to seize the moment and open up her own café. It should be a piece of cake, right

Wrong. As her friends point out, she has trouble remembering where she left her house keys, let alone trying to run her own business. But Issy is determined. Armed with recipes posted to her from Grampa, and with her local bank manager fighting her corner, Issy attempts to prove everyone wrong. Following your dreams is never easy, and this is no exception. Can Issy do it?

Kept my interest

I always know I’m going to like a book within the first couple of minutes of listening. I love all Jenny Colgan books. The only thing though is that I think there’s a tiny chunk missing in Ch.18. Without spoiling the story I couldn’t find when Izzy finds out about her shop being sold. I listened to it over and over. Weird.

easy listening.

Any additional comments?

well written characters, issy being a favourite as well a lewis pearl's little boy.
sprinkled with recipes, the character's hopes and fears, and Penelope Rawlins performance which brought all the characters to life this is a good book to listen to between the heavier stuff (crime etc.,).
looking forward to Christmas at the cupcake café.

Sweet and warm feel good book

Really really enjoyed this book! For someone who rarely listens to fiction, I very much enjoyed this and have found the fiction genre that I find entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable. I was originally drawn towards the book by the cupcakes and food descriptions.
This is a lovely listen. Although I initially thought I’d struggle to complete it, I found myself engrossed and captivated by the story and characters.
The author has described characters and scenes so well that I was able to easily picture these in my mind.
Narrator has a nice voice too. It’s difficult to change voices according to characters and whilst many reviewers didn’t appreciate this, I think she has done a good job.
An easy listen and generally likeable characters.
Thank you Audible.

Light, fun read with some great characters

This book is an excellent cupcake: light, full of flavour and with just the right amount of sweetness to make you smile.

This was my first Jenny Colgan book. My wife bought it for me because I’d said that it was good to see a novel that set out simply to bring its readers some happiness. The book kept its promise.
There was enough plot to keep me turning the pages, enough character definition to want the heroine to win through and choose the right guy in the end and enough contemporary British context to give a distinctive time and place.

Jenny Colgan has such a light touch that’s it’s possible to fail to notice how well she writes. There are no wasted words and all the ingredients are perfectly balanced. As with the cupcakes that she describes, the success of the novel comes from have “real” ingredients (people and situations that I recognise) prepared with love.

Love is at the centre of this novel: the possibility for love and happiness created by the very existence of the café and the cupcakes it serves, the love she has for her baker grandfather and the craft that he’s taught her, the love for other people despite their flaws and despite their diverse backgrounds.

This books is about the triumph of hope and authentic passion over greed and selfishness. It is about having a life, not a lifestyle.

And of course it has great cupcake recipes.

If you need something baked with love and leavened with hope in your life, take a few hours off and spend some time at thc Cupcake Cafe.

What a lovely and cheerful read! Nothing too complicated; a pure joy to read/listen in this case. My first Jenny Colgan book and believe you me not the last.

A brilliant first read!

As a baker, currently doing slimming world, I fancied a little baking novel to satisfy my love of baking. It did actually end up with me eating cake, but nevermind.

This is the first time I've read anything by Jenny and I must say, with this one, I was impressed. The piece was intriguing and the character sketches well written giving the reader a good idea of the characters from Jenny's minds eye. I personally found all of the characters involving, even minor ones ending up to play a bigger part. I was keen to know what happened next so carried on and finished in a week. I found some of the swearing unnecessary however. As a baker, of course, I loved the recipes and will be coming back to these.

Poor editing at key points in the story let it down

The story is good but two major editing fails at key points in the story did spoil it for me. I also found the male accents really poorly done.

Such a shame as the overall story is good.
