About this listen

In a world where mages and monster grow from cultivating mana, Isaac joins the class of humans known as mages who absorb mana to grow more powerful. To become a mage, he must bind a mana beast to himself to access and control mana. But when his mana beast is far more human than he expected, Isaac struggles with the budding relationship between the two of them as he prepares to enter his first dungeon.

Unfortunately for Isaac, he doesn’t have time to ponder the questions of his relationship with Aurora. His sleepy town of Locksprings is in for a rude awakening, and he has to decide which side of the war he is going to stand on.

it's ok

The story wasn't bad, but the narrating was a bit monotones, especially in the fights. I found it hard to keep attention.

Awesome progression and relationships

The story starts off slow, but that just allows us to see all aspects of the MC as he progresses through his challenges and relationships. It's awesome to see how he develops.

really great world building and plot starter!

fantastic narration and really interesting world building, with my only frustrations being some narrative inconsistencies (MC mentions immortal bodies early on, then asks someone about them later, not even knowing the term for example) and some areas where the personal gets lost in favour of the cultivation crunch (doesn't tell an important relative that another relative is looking for them...)

finally, there is the usual "levels up yet still doesn't seem much more powerful" trope in the genre. we hear about his strange power and strength yet he's .. the same as people at other ranks.

that is to say this didn't really detract - it's a great setup and the world is interesting - I'll be getting the next in the series as with Bruce he tends to find his feet and iterate really well in his series.

An editor, an editor, my kingdom for an editor.

This book is 4 times longer than it really is due to the guy repetting himself constantly, the same sentance with minor changes over and over again.

Add to that a narrator that emphasises odd words and a generally basic and slow story.

I would give this one a miss.

Update; 1h 17m this book is going back. skip this drivel.
