Summary
What begins as the sheer desire for adventure turns into a spiritual quest as a young woman comes to terms with her family, her dreams, and her first love.
Tania Aebi was an unambitious 18-year-old, a bicycle messenger in New York City by day, a Lower East Side barfly at night. In short, she was going nowhere - until her father offered her a challenge: Tania could choose either a college education or a 26-foot sloop. The only catch was that if she chose the sailboat, she'd have to sail around the world - alone. She chose the boat, and for the next two and a half years and 27,000 miles, it was her home.
With only her cat as companion, she discovered the wondrous beauties of the Great Barrier Reef and the death-dealing horrors of the Red Sea. She suffered through a terrifying collision with a tanker in the Mediterranean and a lightning storm off the coast of Gibraltar. And, ultimately, what began with the sheer desire for adventure turned into a spiritual quest as Tania came to terms with her troubled family life, fell in love for the first time, and - most of all - confronted her own needs, desires, dreams, and goals. . . .

Stick with it
Great travel story of an inexperienced young girl taking to the seas for a couple of years and learning as she goes.
I listen to a lot of audio books and was put off by the narrator at first as she felt rushed and unnatural. When I looked up who the narrator was I saw it was the author herself, rather than a professional narrator so I stuck with it. After a few chapters she finds her rythm so it's worth sticking with it as it's a truly great story.

Inspiring story narration spoiled it
Maybe should have got someone else to read it. The different character voices are pretty awful…

Fantastic story, enjoyed every minute
The places, the family and friends, the nautical references were all just great, I am a newbie to sailing and felt I was learning as Tania learnt on her trip. A very warming story, and loved to hear about these far off places you only read about, I felt like I was there sometimes. One day I would love to do a tenth of what Tania did.

Good story - awful narrator
It’s the author who is narrating, so you would expect this to add an element of natural story telling and an understanding of technical phrases etc, however she gets so many technical terms wrong and sounds like a monotone breathless robot - go and buy the book as it’s a great story but skip this audio book.
