About this listen

ALAN RICKMAN was one of the world-class actors of his generation, as well as a tireless political activist, an avid traveller and a devoted confidant and friend. Through his never-before-seen diaries – a twenty-five-year passion project – Rickman invites readers backstage and into his life.

A SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

Alan Rickman remains one of the most beloved actors of all time across almost every genre, from his breakout role as Die Hard’s villainous Hans Gruber to his heart-wrenching run as Professor Severus Snape, and beyond. His air of dignity, his sonorous voice and the knowing wit he brought to each role continue to captivate new audiences today. But Rickman’s artistry wasn’t confined to just his performances. Rickman’s writing details the extraordinary and the ordinary in a way that is anecdotal, indiscreet, witty, gossipy and utterly candid. He takes us behind the scenes on films and plays ranging from Sense & Sensibility, the Harry Potter series, Private Lives, My Name is Rachel Corrie and many more.

The diaries run from 1993 to his death in 2016 and offer insight into both a public and private life. Here is Rickman the consummate professional actor, but also the friend, the traveller, the fan, the director, the enthusiast: in short, the real Alan Rickman. Here is a life fully lived, all detailed in intimate and characteristically plain-spoken prose. Reading the diaries is like listening to Rickman chatting to a close friend.

Madly, Deeply also includes a foreword by Emma Thompson and a selection of Rickman’s early diaries, dating from 1974 to 1982, when his acting life first began.

Unexpectedly good

Despite it being what it says, a bunch of diary entries, I loved this. The entries themselves were individually pedestrian but the narration gave the effect of AR musing aloud

Gets better

It is a reading of diary entries. The first lot are brief and uninteresting but as it goes on he 'talks' to his diary more so it gets better.

A bit dreary

Bless Alan, I loved him as an actor, orator and philospher but this got a little tedious…. Better as the book with his superbly drawn pictures. Buy the book instead :)

Splendid a true account of one self

I’ve really enjoyed getting to know Alan personally. I’ve always loved him since being a child and the year he passed was a hard year for all. We lost him, David bowie and Pete burns all in the same year. These were three of my hero’s. He was a beautiful witty soul who could pull off being a diva to others. He managed to make others love him for who he was was.

I’ve loved every moment of this book and it’s a book you could read over and over again!

Thank you for allowing Alan fans to get to feel him personally and learn his ways though his very own pen.

ruined by narration

I found it too long and pretty repetitive. It would have been easy enough to listen to though if it hadn't been for the truly awful hammy narration. Boy would Alan have had something to say about it !

Took a while to get into the swing of it

Took a while to get into the swing of it, as in the narration of the diary notes. Once I did it was a wonderful insight into the man, his life, work, his friendships and relationships. All in all fascinating, I loved it!

so fascinating, funny and sad at the same time. there was so much I think he had left to say as an actor and director.

An elderly fan

Very well read although I would have liked to hear Alan Rickman's own voice. I felt I could hear his deep tones from time to time; they were so special. Just a lovely way of presenting a life. Loved it. An interesting man and special actor with a lovely personality, it seems.
