About this listen

'A CHILLING new memoir by the daughter of mass murderer Fred West and his wife Rose describes the savage cruelty of her upbringing in 25 Cromwell Street, Gloucester' DAILY MAIL

'Mae, I mean this ... I'm not a good person and I let all you children down ...' Rose West, HM PRISON DURHAM

It has taken over 20 years for Mae West to find the perspective and strength to tell her remarkable story: one of an abusive, violent childhood, of her serial killer parents and how she has rebuilt her life in the shadow of their terrible crimes.

Through her own memories, research and the letters her mother wrote to her from prison, Mae shares her emotionally powerful account of her life as a West. From a toddler locked in the deathly basement to a teen fighting off the sexual advances of her father, Mae's story is one of survival. It also answers the questions: how do you come to terms with knowing your childhood bedroom was a graveyard? How do you accept the fact your parents sexually tortured, murdered and dismembered young women? How do you become a mother yourself when you're haunted by the knowledge that your own mother was a monster? Why were you spared and how do you escape the nightmare?©2018 Neil McKay (P)2018 Orion Publishing Group

Brave lady

Interesting and well balanced read. Two things I 've learned: that there was a strong sense of family despite the horrors and that the human spirit can survive the intense pain endured and eventually learn to thrive. Much love to you Mae- for revealing how it was and coming through it all. I wish you well.

Decent book, horribly narrated

It is a very much a story from the daughters POV rather than an overview and she never speculates on what she didnt see which is good i guess as it relies on facts. Her stories are pretty intense though and quite distressing at times and show what monsters her parents were. It's comforting to know one of them is dead and the other will never leave prison. But there is quite a lot of waffle in the book which is largely uninteresting and a bit of a slog to get through.

The narrator has the most annoying voice i think ive heard on any audiobook, she sounds like a 75 year old simpleton with a cold trying to put on the voice of a 5 year old and is very irritating to listen to. When she puts on another accent or tries to put emotion into her voice it gets worse.

Fascinating

A fascinating insight behind the closed door of 25 Cromwell Street. The surviving West children are often the forgotten victims of the gruesome tale of Fred and Rose and this book, bravely written by their daughter, Mae, brings to the fore the full horror of an abusive childhood that went unnoticed by teachers, neighbours, social workers, police officers and the authorities in general until it was far, far too late. The beauty of this book is not the different perspective Mae’s story brings but her courage in not permitting her tragic past define her. Bravo, Mae.

Chilling, moving, tragic and numbing.

Writing that I enjoyed this book is wrong, it is a story of monsters that were able to get away with the most hideous atrocities through lack of interest from the services. Mae West has written the most fascinating insight into a most extraordinary life. How she walked away and lived, what appears to be a relatively normal married life is unbelievable. This is a shocking book, understanding a tiny amount of life with the Wests. They were evil parents, brutal and cold. You really cannot get your head around what it must have been like to grow up in that house, but Mae does a good job of telling her story, all be it a story that is so ugly, violent and immensely sad.

Very good listen

A very interesting listen. I recommend if you like true crime.

I did struggle with the content at times, but I knew the basis for the story so knew what I would be in for.
