About this listen
This is only the beginning.
King and Queen Law: No means no.
Anything you think can be used against you.
Blood drawn in anger will be answered with blood.
The Feline chooses the mate.
Kings mate for life.
“One day, my darling, you will meet your Amato, and they will love you as you are.”
Lou Barstow’s world is turned upside down over a mating contract.
Horse trainer is an odd job for a lion, but Lou prefers his horses to most people, even when they talk back and fuss because he didn’t bring them sugar cubes. After mucking stalls and mending fences, he deals with Pride politics over a beer and a game of pool. He also teaches the mated lionesses how to line dance, keeping the peace and marriages together.
For Lou, things just are, and he’s accepted them. Likes his place in the shadows. He dreams of having a mate but never expected one. His one want is a soft place to fall. Lou wants someone to be his equal and who pushes him in the right direction instead of pushing him away. Someone who understands Lou’s place, if a mate exists for him at all.
Then Lou’s Uncle, King Xeno Barstow, insists Camp Fowler, the next in line to be King of Juniper Springs Pride, is his promised mate. A mating between two Prides is almost unheard of, especially when one or both are destined to be King. Bloodlines are everything, and Kings mate to have heirs. They don’t mate to nobodies. And then the truth comes out. Lou was born to be the next King. Sacrifices were made to bring him into the world, and he must fulfill his destiny with Camp by his side, no matter the cost. After all, his Uncle went to a lot of trouble to unite Juniper Springs and Fire Ridge.
Could this be a love match? Could they make it work?
Is Camp his soft place to fall? Or is he the beginning of something more dangerous?

Opposites attract
Fated mates is a concept I always enjoy. Throw in a marriage pact, and I knew I’d enjoy this short audio. The premise was cute, and the execution was good. I liked both Lou and Camp and was happy they found their happily ever after.
Finally, I’ve enjoyed Lance West’s narration before and he did a great job with this one as well, especially Lou’s accent. An enjoyable listen.

Twisty-turn plot short MM shifter romance
The blurb doesn't really do this story justice, there's so much more complex plot, twist and turns and secrets unfolding in this story than just an opposites-attract MM romance. Honestly, I wish the book had been longer, as I felt it only scratched the surface of everything that's going on in Lou's pride and family, not to mention his unfolding relationship with his contracted mate Campbell. In fact there's so much going on that it can be a bit confusing, especially in the beginning, but overall the story is worth it, and perhaps more will become clear as the series unfolds? Definitely warrants a re-listen and the narration is great, with a soft southern accent that fits the characters perfectly.

TW: violence and death
This is a very short story that is fast paced and sweet. I enjoyed the world that the author created, I just wish that it was outlined more. I felt like we were dropped in the middle of a story at the beginning with very little explanation. Even still it was pretty easy to follow the story and I thought the plot premis was great. The story was interesting and kept my attention from start to finish.I did feel at the end that I wanted more but it did say TBC and I definitely will read the next book. Both of the main characters were loveable and I enjoyed the side characters as well. The main chatacters had great chemistry and made a great couple. There were a few things that felt odd to me like the fast relationship development and how quickly the different characters feelings changed but I had to remind myself that this is fantasy and they don't have emotions like us. Everything is explained away with fate like as if it's a magic spell. I did listen to this twice in preparation for the 2nd book and it was just as interesting the 2nd time.
Lance West did a phenomenal job with the narration. He had a pleasant reading voice. He expressed all the emotions and brought the story to life. He gave the characters distinct voices that made it easy to follow the story and suited the characters well. Not just the main characters but the side characters as well.

Intriguing but confusing
I had mixed feelings about this one. I was intrigued by the world the author created but things got confusing pretty fast. Things weren’t explained well which made me lose track of what was going on.
The narrator’s performance was excellent.

Short, sharp intro to new MM shifter series
Good world building into a new shifter world full of lions.
It started well and ended well, but there was a bit in the middle where I had to rewind and listen again as I thought I had missed a section, but I hadn't.
I will look out for the second book as I am intrigued by how the story continues.
Lance West was a pleasure to listen to, clean and concise. I speed this narration up to 1.20 on Audible, which is usual for me.

Mixed feelings
I have mixed feelings about this short novella. When I first started I thought it must've been a spinoff from a previous series or not book 1 because the way the characters were introduced and the setting and rules of the pride made me feel I was missing a chunk of information.
I kept listening and there were some parts I enjoyed but plenty where I was still confused about what was actually going on. I don't feel I really got to know Lou and Camp very well at all and wasn't sold on their relationship, though there were times I felt a connection between them.
The world the author has created could be an interesting one to get to know, but I'm not sure I will continue with the series at this point.
The narrator did an ok job.
