Summary

Loveday Cardew prefers books to people, and her job in a York bookshop is her refuge. If you look carefully, you might see the first lines of the novels she loves the most tattooed on her skin, but there are secrets Loveday will never share.

Into the bookshop come a poet, a lover, a friend and three mysterious deliveries, each of which stirs unsettling memories she wants to forget. Turning the pages of her past will be the hardest thing Loveday has ever done. Can she trust those around her? Can she right a heartbreaking wrong? And will she find the words to tell her own story?

Unusually good book

I loved the way this book was written - the use of language, the metaphors, the internalising dialogue of Loveday. I thought the storyline was a little idealistic towards the end. The narration by Imogen Church was exceptional - absolutely loved the voice she gave Loveday.

Loved the unravelling of the plot and characterisation. Highly recommended. Super performance by Imogen Church.

This is a very good story and very well written and researched. Great empathy for Loveday.

An enthralling novel

This book captured my emotions from the first chapter. The characters unfolded throughout the book. The story was emotive, full of wit and irony, but sensitively told. The narrator bought the book to life. Outstanding in her characterisation and narrative. In case you hadn’t guessed, I loved it!

Inviting and comfortable

I loved every second of this book, and particularly the narrator. A very touching, well-told story.

Absolutely wonderful book!

I grabbed this without thinking when I saw it on daily deal but I was transfixed from the very beginning and can’t wait to discover more from this author! I even loved the acknowledgements at the end and the book group questions! Highly recommend for book lovers everywhere!

I loved it!

For some this might have been a bit slow but I loved it. The characters were excellently crafted, even the smaller ones. The story is one of secrets, family and friendships. It is poignant at times. I love books, so the thought of Loveday having lines from her favourite books tattooed on her body was so significant.I loved Archie with his exuberance and kindness. For me one of the overriding themes is that friends can be as important if not more so than family. The characters are a mixed bag but full of warmth and humour. I will definitely be looking out for more by this author. The narration was good, particularly Loveday. The male voices were slightly off though.

Amazing thriller-chick lit !

No, it’s not really chick lit. But I thought it would be when I bought it. Turned out to be so much more!
The narrator does an absolutely brilliant work with bringing forth Lovejoy’s anger, pricklyness and insecurity. Absolutely unputdownable, and now I can’t wait to read the author’s next book!
