A book that has changed my entire outlook!
As an HR manager who has transitioned from corporate life, I found Sarah Hamilton-Gill's "Leap into HR Consulting" to be an indispensable guide. Having listened to the audiobook extensively, I was compelled to purchase a hard copy for continual reference. This book has not only inspired my journey into consultancy but also equipped me with the tools and confidence to leave full-time employment and focus on my business full-time within the next year.
Sarah's story is both relatable and inspiring. From her early career as the youngest HR manager at Sainsbury’s to founding her own successful consulting firm, her journey underscores the potential for transformation within the HR profession. Her experiences illustrate the rewards of consultancy, both professionally and personally.
The book is structured around Sarah’s proprietary "From Corporate to Consulting Model®," which is divided into five key areas: Confidence, Clarity, Credibility, Collaboration, and Courage. Each section provides actionable steps and exercises, making the transition process tangible and manageable.
Sarah emphasises the importance of building confidence, especially around your expertise. The "Wheel of Life" exercise on page 131 is particularly powerful for assessing and enhancing personal and professional balance. This section motivated me to reflect on my strengths and areas for growth, bolstering my self-assurance in my consulting capabilities.
Chapter 10 delves into defining your “why” and identifying your ideal client. The detailed questions about your ideal client’s demographics, goals, and pain points (page 151) were instrumental in refining my business focus. This clarity has allowed me to tailor my services to meet specific client needs effectively.
Building a credible presence online and offline is critical. The "Presence Platform Audit Tool" (page 181) helped me enhance my social media and online visibility, ensuring that my professional brand resonates with potential clients. This practical advice has been invaluable in establishing my consultancy’s credibility.
The book underscores the importance of forming strategic partnerships and working with associates. The section on collaboration (page 213) provides insights into identifying and leveraging business support networks. This has opened new avenues for growth and collaboration in my consultancy practice.
Finally, Sarah addresses the emotional and practical aspects of making the leap from corporate to consultancy. The "Top Tips Before You Resign" checklist (page 248) offers a step-by-step guide to ensure a smooth transition. These tips have been crucial in my planning and decision-making process, providing a sense of security as I embark on this new venture.
"Leap into HR Consulting" has profoundly impacted my career trajectory. The combination of Sarah’s personal anecdotes, practical frameworks, and actionable advice makes this book a must-read for any HR professional considering a move to consultancy. It’s not just a book; it’s a comprehensive toolkit that prepares you for every aspect of the transition.
I highly recommend this book to HR professionals at any stage of their career. Whether you are just contemplating the shift or are in the midst of transitioning, Sarah’s insights will guide you through the process. The investment in both the audiobook and the hard copy has been one of the best decisions I’ve made for my professional development.
In conclusion, "Leap into HR Consulting" is more than just a guide—it’s a catalyst for change. It has inspired me to take bold steps towards my consulting career, and I am confident it will do the same for others. Sarah Hamilton-Gill’s expertise and genuine passion for helping others succeed shine through on every page, making this an essential read for aspiring HR consultants.
