About this listen

"Lush, engrossing and full of mystery and dark magic" (BookPage), Labyrinth's Heart is the thrilling conclusion to M. A. Carrick's Rook & Rose trilogy, in which a con artist, a vigilante, and a crime lord become reluctant allies in the quest to save their city from a dangerous ancient magic.

May you see the face and not the mask.

Ren came to Nadežra with a plan. She would pose as the long-lost daughter of the noble house Traementis. She would secure a fortune for herself and her sister. And she would vanish without a backward glance. She ought to have known that in the city of dreams, nothing is ever so simple.

Now, she is Ren, con-artist and thief. But she is also Renata, the celebrated Traementis heir. She is Arenza, the mysterious pattern-reader and political rebel. And she is the Black Rose, a vigilante who fights alongside the legendary Rook.

Even with the help of Grey Serrado and Derossi Vargo, it is too many masks for one person to wear. And as the dark magic the three of them helped unleash builds to storm that could tear the very fabric of the city apart, it's only a matter of time before one of the masks slips-and everything comes crashing down around them.

Loved the story

A fitting conclusion and a story and performance that kept my all interest and attention throughout.

Intricate

I loved the characters arcs over this trilogy. We follow our favourite con artist, masked vigilante and crime lord as they strive to protect their city and peoples. M. A Carrick have created a masterwork of politics, family and culture - and it’s a joy to see it come together.
The narration is really helpful as she picks out inner voices, accents and personas so each person has a unique, easily identifiable voice.

very good

Satisfying storyline, fun magic systems, and enjoyable characters. (I still don't like multi-POV stories, though.)

Brilliant final instalment!

I have thoroughly enjoyed this entire trilogy and the final book was marvellous! There was a lot of complex plot lines that needed wrapping up, but the author wasn't lazy and took the time to bring everything together. Loved the character development, loved the friendship and exploration of the meaning and purpose of family. I also really enjoyed the gender-neutral social structures, which you don't see enough in fantasy fiction (which is mad and frustrating, considering you can create a world from scratch!).

The narration was also fantastic, which was a huge achievement considering the breadth of accents! The reader can really make or break an audiobook for me, and this one was an absolute gem!

Gahhh

I can’t believe this series is over!! Narration was superb as always, the pacing was a little uneven and stretched in some places, rushed in others, but I’m just glad we got more of this world and more of these characters! I cried a few times, laughed many more

Loved everything about it!

It’s hard to believe that this series is the product of two people writing together as it’s so seamless - as though Tess herself has created the extraordinary tapestry. I can’t wait to read more from this duo.

It’s a beautifully crafted world with skilled drawing of separate cultures with their own languages, traditions and needs.

A word also for the narrator: her apparently effortless mastery of the wide range of accents and speech patterns is amazing, from the very West of Europe to the East, taking in class difference within each, as well as her US accents… it is very well done indeed.

I have lived and breathed these books

While there is a lot of vocabulary to learn and memorise, it contributes to the rich world this author conjures up. This is the best sort of story for me, detailed and complex so that I am immersed, but that I can save it for the times I want to go walking and listening. It is definitely not a background book.
As the final book in a trilogy, I also feel quite satisfied about the ending and how everything was concluded.
The narrator brings it all to life, she reads it like she’s in it, and all her accents and tones are so good, there’s no doubt who each character is

Enjoyable Trilogy

I really enjoyed listening to all three books although I did find it hard going to start with to follow the names, places and totally invented language. In the end I ignored all of that and once I did I found myself thoroughly immersed in the stories.

Gorgeous end to a gorgeous trilogy

Ahhh. What can I say about this trilogy. I absolutely love it. There is some beautifully complex world building and a lot of interesting characters and I love the 'Numinatra' magic sprinkled throughout.
The narrator does fantastically well with the array of accents and improves the story for me, even though it is incredibly well written as it is. I think I follow it better with her narration as all the long complicated names can get a bit confusing! Although I've read the first two twice and now the third I still get constantly tripped up by character names and mix them up a lot!
MILD SPOILERS
This book spent a lot of time wrapping up loose ends, as was to be expected, but that is the downside of a book 3/3. I wish it was a bit more grit and bit less romance, but that being said I enjoyed it and even had a tear in my eye once or twice. I want more Tess & Pavlin, more Ren & Grey, and absolutely more Vargo & Arkady. I would read another trilogy on them alone!
