Summary
Italy is a land forever associated with beauty: in music, in art and in nature. Down the centuries these stories were brought home by travellers, soldiers and merchants, returning crusaders, gypsies and pilgrims. Much loved and often repeated they grew in the telling to become wholly Italian in their nature - which is as much to say that today they are very beautiful indeed. “The Merchant's Beautiful Wife;” “The Three Fools;” “Marco & the Cloud;” “Strega Nona;” “Angiola and her Beautiful Hair;” “The Shepherd who made the Princess Laugh;” “Oraggio and Bianchinetta;” “Clever Signor Crab.”

Stories are not cute
I'm not sure how old these fairy tales are but it's not something you would enjoy reading to your kids in 2023! The characters and their pursues are pretty mean. They teach about human worth being based on beauty, wealth, and title/social achievements. Anyone ugly or poor gets done here! If anything, the moral of these stories is how things were done in the old days and how far society has become to recognise certain behaviours as no longer acceptable. I personally purchased this book as I was interested in the history side of things and how Italian fairytales compared to those of other countries. In that respect, this book didn't disappoint. My curiosity has been satisfied!
