Summary

It Worked for Me is filled with vivid experiences and lessons learned that have shaped the legendary career of the four-star general and former Secretary of State Colin Powell. At its heart are Powell's "Thirteen Rules" - such as "Get mad, then get over it" and "Share credit" - that introduce his principles for effective leadership: conviction, hard work, and, above all, respect for others.

A natural storyteller, Powell offers warm and engaging parables with wise advice on succeeding in the workplace and beyond. "Trust your people," he counsels as he delegates presidential briefing responsibilities to two junior State Department desk officers. "Do your best - someone is watching," he advises those just starting out, recalling his own teenage job mopping floors in a factory.

Powell combines the insight he gained in the military and four presidential administrations with lessons from his immigrant-family upbringing in the Bronx and his training in the ROTC. The result is a powerful portrait of a leader who is reflective, self-effacing, and grateful for everyone he works with.

A brilliant and original blueprint for leadership, Colin Powell's It Worked for Me is bound to inspire, move, and surprise readers.

Excellent

Really good and well worth a listen, studying strategy and management at the moment and found myself linking up what I heard to what I have been studying.

Really easy listening narration.

interesting story from a man admired the world over as a leader.
I score this high however on a couple of chapters in the middle I noticed a change in the voice. This did not affect the book adversely in any way.
it is full of leadership examples and some fantastic anecdotes.

Shows an interesting side to Powel

Great book to listen to. Powell is inspirational with his high energy and strong attitude. He is very honest about a lot of things, for example that his success is partly the result of a good portion of luck. He also worked hard and was perhaps also a favorite for government jobs for his loyalty and execution. Clearly he is however not the most intelligent person ever, in fact rather naive and gullible in many ways. Perhaps that‘s why he was picked so often for positions by the Presidents and others.

inspirational to say the least

This really turns the perception of this man around. Media polarizes everything but I am so glad I took a leap of faith and listened to this.

really enjoyed the lessons that I learnt

as someone British I wasn't sure what to expect from this book and it was surprised to myself I even purchased it but nonetheless haven't got through the entirety of the book I am actually inspired to read his autobiography of his life so really good lessons on leadership would highly recommend
