About this listen

Discover the remarkable life of Isoroku Yamamoto...
Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was one of Japan’s most influential military leaders and a key architect of naval warfare during World War II. Born into an impoverished samurai family, he worked his way to the top by attending the Imperial Japanese Naval Academy, where he consistently ranked among the best in his class. Early in his career, he recognized that the future of naval warfare wasn’t in massive battleships but in aircraft carriers and aviation, an idea that would eventually shape Japan’s military strategy.

Throughout the 1930s, Yamamoto was a vocal opponent of war with the United States and strongly opposed Japan’s deepening ties with Nazi Germany and Italy. But even though he may not have agreed with the course his country was taking, his sense of duty never wavered. As tensions escalated, he reluctantly planned the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, believing that a decisive first strike was Japan’s best chance for victory. He knew, however, that going up against America’s industrial power was a long shot. As the war dragged on, his fears were proven right—Japan suffered major setbacks, including the disastrous Battle of Midway, which turned the tide against them.

In the end, Admiral Yamamoto would not live to see Japan’s final defeat. Though he had tried to steer Japan away from disaster, he died in service of the empire he had so faithfully devoted himself to.
