Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Before Isabelle I knew nothing of sex.
Before Isabelle I knew nothing of freedom.
Before Isabelle I knew nothing of life.
Paris in the early '70s. Sam, an American student, meets a woman in a bookshop. Isabelle is enigmatic, beautiful, older and, unlike Sam, experienced in love's many contradictions. Sam is instantly smitten - but wary of the wedding ring on her finger.
What begins as a regular arrangement in Isabelle’s tiny Parisian apartment transforms into a true affair of the heart, and one which lasts for decades to come.
Isabelle in the Afternoon is a novel that questions what we seek, what we find, what we settle for - and shows how love, when not lived day in, day out, can become the passion of a lifetime.

Another thought provoking novel
I have always enjoyed DKs writings and was not disappointed with this one. A story of love and compromises that make you consider your own life choices. Just a little tired of the term ‘and you, I’ that crops up frequently in all his books.

Happiness and heartache over the decades
Relatable main characters who you long to see happy together. Then life gets in the way. Wonderfully clear depiction of the ebb and flow of our relationships and life.

So disappointing
I loved Douglas Kennedy’s early books with their exciting plot lines revealing many aspects of human nature. In comparison, I have found his last two books extremely disappointing. After the last one, I decided not to read or listen to any future books but was tempted by the memory of being engrossed by his earlier works. I wish I hadn’t bothered. I found Isabelle in the Afternoon to be lacking any real plot and padded out by tedious and often sordid details about the lives of unlikeable characters. It was very depressing and a waste of time. Unless the author rediscovers the magic of his early novels, I won’t be reading any more of them.

Terrible Narrative. Such a drawn out boring story.
I am a huge Douglas Kennedy fan. But this was just not his usual high standard. The narrator was so bad I could not finish the book.
