Summary

The epic conclusion to James Maxwell's gripping fantasy series.

The world is facing a war to end all wars, a confrontation that will destroy everything Dion and Chloe hold dear. With Palemon's dragon army growing in number, time is running out...

Dion is doing everything in his power to prepare his kingdom, but he knows it will not be enough. Although he needs Chloe's help, recent tragedy makes him terrified for her safety. Magic is dangerous. Only Palemon is too arrogant to see it.

As chaos engulfs the land and Palemon risks civilization itself, Dion and Chloe must unite people of all nations to have any chance of survival.

A real struggle to finish

This series started well. I’d really enjoyed Maxwell’s previous Evermen Saga and the first novel in this series, Golden Age, was a highly enjoyable romp. Silver Road was noticeable for its drop in quality, but nothing like what was to come. During Copper Chain and then Iron Will the characters became ever more one dimensional often making decisions that didn’t make any narrative sense but more annoyingly making huge unbelievable leaps in their character progression.

The story lacked direction, became ever more simplistic , even childlike (at times it DID feel like a children’s book) and often appeared to have had whole irrelevant sections inserted for no apparent reason.

This must be my 4th or 5th attempt to finish the book and I’m still 2 hours from the end, but honestly I just don’t really care how it finishes. I don’t really care what happens to Dion or Chloe or any of the other protagonists.

It might have been a good first book and then a sequel, or maybe even a trilogy, but just feels like it has been strung out for the sake of it. Such a disappointment…

Struggled to stick with this one

Having listened to the previous books in the series, this was harder to complete. The story was less absorbing and the language used overly complicated to listen to (in my opinion). Glad to have completed the series but tough to persevere at times.
