Critic reviews

"A detective novel by Mr. Wills Crofts is always an event to those who know...Mr. Crofts is among the few muscular writers of detective fiction. He has never let me down." (Harold Nicolson, Daily Express)

Slightly complex story but great narration

I felt the story was slightly too convoluted and cliched. However, the character of Inspector French is enjoyable, although slow to appear this episode. Phil Fox does a great job of narration once again

weakest one so far

not much of a mystery and plot rather contrived compared to previous author works....imo because French brought into plot at a late stage

Enjoyable

It isn't the best detection classic. But it was an enjoyable listen, if a bit long winded in parts. The initial main character was a bit of an extremely gullible fool, believing what anyone told him - but it would have been a short story otherwise.
