Summary

A man whose future is assigned. A heart that yearns to be free.

There’s a reason why Lee Kennedy is still in college - and it has nothing to do with his academic performance. He’s switched his major repeatedly and stalled on his Master’s thesis, but there’s only so much longer he can hold out. And once he graduates, it’s time to trigger the Algorithm.

Everyone in Lee’s family has allowed the Algorithm to match them with a spouse. As has everyone on his block. His neighborhood. In fact, everyone he’s ever known. Pairing with his own Algorithm match seems inevitable...until, at his sister’s wedding, he meets Roman.

The waiter lives in the Taxable District, a neighborhood that’s only a brief train ride away, but feels like another world. The seedy District is governed by different standards - different expectations - so it’s not exactly a surprise that Roman isn’t married. But it’s definitely a shock to taste his lips.

One forbidden encounter leaves Lee questioning everything. He longs for the freedom to choose not only his own partner, but his own destiny. When defying the Algorithm will cost Lee his livelihood, his family and his home, is he strong enough to take another path?

This coming-of-age story will appeal to listeners who enjoy character-driven science fiction. It’s a complete standalone novella.

A great story

I thoroughly enjoyed this. It's got great world building. However I'd class it as romance adjacent, while there is a relationship, at its heart this is about Lee breaking out of his preordained life to be true to himself and, at the same time, get his man.

Joel Leslie gives an excellent performance and displays an array of voices.I

Very enjoyable.

Enjoyable but could have been even more

If this book was a bit longer and the author developed the couple’s initial scenes together to show more of an initial emotional connection between them, I think it could have easily been a 5 star review. I thought what was included in the book was great, and I loved that it was about the main character developing as an individual and I wouldn’t change that. However, it the scenes where the couple met and what happened after seemed so rushed that I didn’t get invested in them. I wanted a bit more insight into their personalities and for them to get to know each other a bit, so maybe a scene is needed where they have more of a conversation. Still good though and worth a listen. I’ve listened to a few of this author’s books and they’re all a bit short and lacking character development of anyone who isn’t the main character. I hope they develop as a writer over time as they have a great talent.

Stunning voyage of self discovery

This book has the most amazing world building and I am not usually a fan of dystopian type future stories, but I loved this one. The two main characters are both endearing and I was rooting for them from the outset.
Lee is a perennial student, avoiding being matched with a wife by the algorithm. At his sister's wedding rehearsal dinner he meets Roman who turns his world upside down and encourages Lee to discover just who can be. Their journey to finding their future is both stressful and delightful, with a gorgeous HEA.
The narration is stellar, as always with Joel Lesley.
Highly recommended!

So intriguing

I am in awe of Jordan Castillo Price’s skill at world building and Joel Leslie’s ability to make that world so vivid. This is so much more than a romance it is a journey of self discovery Lee has to take if he is ever to be happy. The concept of having your partner chosen by an algorithm, state arranged marriage, for the purpose of repopulating and no recourse was so intriguing it kept me hooked. I love Joel Leslie’s ability with voices. There are times when it seems there is more than just him narrating the story. I will definitely be listening to this book over and over again.

Different

It’s chilling the possibilities for the future and how we’ll live. This is one is realistically chilling and yet, full of possibilities Lee has a lot of realisations to make, but he comes through like a boss! Roman well he’s just awesome.
JCP is an awesome author, add in Joel Leslie and you have an incredible listen.

Follow your heart!

Lee has avoided triggering the Algorithm that would see him married to a compatible woman, and when he meets Roman, he’ll try anything to subvert the system and be with him. Dystopian futures are not my favourite genre, but anything by JCP is totally worth it - she is the world-building queen! However, although this is set 200 years in the future, it didn’t seem any different from now except for the Algorithm and that felt jarring. I also didn’t quite connect with the two main characters like I usually do, but this is my first JCP stand-alone novel - maybe I’ve connected with all her other characters because I’ve had time to get to know them over a number of books. Given all that, the message was clear: people should be free to follow their hearts. 🎧 Joel Leslie gives his usual flawless narrative performance!
