Summary
The biography of the aeroplane that won the Battle of Britain.
In the summer of 1940 the fate of Europe hung in the balance. Victory in the forthcoming air battle would mean national survival; defeat would establish German tyranny.
The Luftwaffe greatly outnumbered the RAF, but during the Battle of Britain it was the RAF that emerged triumphant, thanks to two key fighter planes, the Spitfire and the Hurricane. The Hurricane made up over half of Fighter Command's front-line strength, and its revolutionary design transformed the RAF's capabilities.
Leo McKinstry tells the story of the remarkable plane from its designers to the first-hand testimonies of those brave pilots who flew it; he takes in the full military and political background but always keeps the human stories to the fore - to restore the Hawker Hurricane to its rightful place in history.

Brilliant
At last a book which does justice to this wonderful airplane. Maybe the most important machine in world history. Just think of the consequences if it wasn’t available at that time.

Unsung Hero
An objective and informative book, not endless tales of daring do, not endless technical babble for the anoraks. All round a very good read, that explains the development, restores some of Chamberlains unjust reputation, and looks at how to this day Spitfire fever still overshadows probably one of the most important British aircraft, and its massive role in where we stand today. Impressive insights into the design, manufacturing process, and strategic purpose. Please shut up those who from their arm chairs who snort at the Defiant with its turret, or the lack of rear armour on the Hurricane, listen to this and you might grasp no one envisaged meeting anything other than German bombers from behind, as they flew from Germany.
Well read as well, no silly attempts at Allo Allo accents, careful and precise, nothing tripped me up here, I have no problems when I see Peter Noble as the reader, it’s about the book and not about him!
All in all a well balanced book that falls into place amongst others you need to read to get a decent history and not a collection of coffee table books.

A gripping account of the 'cinderella' fighter
Fascinating and informative throughout. I enjoyed Hurricane as much as Lancaster and now look forward to completing the trilogy with Spitfire.

a great telling of an unsung hero
this book has opened my eyes to something I knew little about, I knew that the Hurricane had played a big part in the Battle of Britain, but not so much about the other theatres of war.
