Michaeleen Doucleff
About this listen
In this ground-breaking book, Dr. Michaeleen Doucleff looks back to our ancestors for solutions to our failing modern-day parenting theories.
When Dr Michaeleen Doucleff became a mother, she examined the studies behind modern parenting guidance and found that the evidence was frustratingly limited, and the conclusions often ineffective. She began to wonder if an opposite approach was needed – one founded on traditional wisdom, like the knowledge and experience passed down over hundreds, even thousands, of years within ancient cultures.
With her young daughter in tow, she travelled across the world to observe and practice parenting strategies alongside families in three of the world's most venerable communities: Maya families in Mexico, Inuit families above the Arctic Circle, and Hadza families in Tanzania.
Dr Doucleff soon learned that these cultures don't have the same problems with children that Western parents do. Most strikingly, parents build a relationship with young children that is vastly different from the one many Western parents develop, built on co-operation instead of control; trust instead of fear; and personalised needs instead of standardised development milestones.
In Hunt, Gather, Parent, Doucleff introduces us to families where parents help little ones learn to control their emotions and reduce tantrums by the parents themselves controlling their own frustrations; foster self-sufficiency by safely giving kids the autonomy to manage risks and explore their limits; and motivate children to help with chores without using bribes or threats. Doucleff also talks to psychologists, neuroscientists, anthropologists, and sociologists and explains how the tools and tips can impact children's mental health and development.
.
Packed with practical takeaways, Hunt, Gather, Parent helps us rethink the ways we relate to our children, and reveals a universal parenting paradigm adapted for modern families.

Inspiring & encouraging
Great examples and there is no parent bashing or shaming which was reassuring. We can only do our best; and the book gently guides to the best practises across multiple cultures.

Fabulous
Absolutely fabulous read. A well researched book with lots of tips for parents of young children. I am interested in the Montessori philosophy of child rearing and you can see a lot of these principles at play in the hunter gather child rearing.

Every Western Parent Should Read
This book is magical. It will make your life easier, it will make your child’s life easier, it will profoundly deepen your connection and, I predict, it will heal some of your own childhood wounds. Everyone I know who has read this book has been moved to tears thinking about their own childhood - in a good way. This is a book which western society needs. It makes me aware of the extraordinary amount of conflict and suffering that our western ways of parenting create for children - and for parents.
You can break the cycle and this book will show you how.

this book could change the world
in a nutshell: be what you want to see in the world...specifically, in you child.
if you want a Zen child, be Zen. monkey see, monkey do. model what you want your child to express. simples.
I enjoyed this book tremendously. to be honest, it simply confirmed what I suspected. Western culture is the outlier on this planet and produces relatively horrible children, relative to indigenous cultures. it's no surprise our culture is the one making a pigs ear of our beautiful planet.
This book could easily be categorised under self-development, since we are the ones who need to grow into mature adults if we are to model one for our offspring.
couldn't recommend more. btw, the above opinions are mine, not the authors.

Favorite parenting book
So accessible and true to my intuition as a mom. The author does a great job translating her advice to our society and does so without intimidating or shaming.

Clear and concrete insights
The book has clear and concrete insights. There's a good balance between the overall genetic message, and concrete implementations of that.

Food for thought, and how to implement
Covers several ideas, and how the author implemented them. Covers how the tribes bring up their children and flips some of the conventional wisdom.

One of the best parenting books I've ever listened to
...and I've listened to quite a few.
The book starts off slow and gets better and better. The theory makes sense, biologically and culturally. It flows with entertaining storytelling and every chapter is tied up in a nice summary bow.

Amazing real parenting advice based on our ancestors way of working together with their community and family
I really liked to know more about the ways different cultures raise children. It’s great to see just how much LESS we should be doing and worrying about. It really helped me dive deeper into my own ideas and values for my family.
