About this listen
Once it had been the great forest of Lythe--a vast and impenetrable thicket of green. And here, in the beginning, lived the Fairfaxes, grandly, at Fairfax Manor, visited once by the great Gloriana herself. But over the centuries, the forest had been destroyed, replaced by Streets of Trees. The Fairfaxes have dwindled, too; now they live in Arden, at the end of Hawthorne Close, and are hardly a family at all.
But Isobel Fairfax, who drops into pockets of time and out again, knows about the past. She is 16 and waiting for the return of her mother--the thin, dangerous Eliza, with her scent of nicotine, Arpège, and sex, whose disappearance is part of the mystery that still remains at the heart of the forest.

Very Enjoyable
Really enjoyed the story line. Typical Kate Atkinson style, often going off on a tangent, but the story draws you in, gathering momentum at the end. Great characters and loved the narrator - she really brings the book to life. Definitely recommend

How does she do it?
Descriptive language and character development is incredible as is Atkinson's style of writing. The narrator brilliantly encapsulates the essence of the story in her delivery.

Completely magical
I absolutely loved this book - and the narration, too. It's magical, amusing, full of twists and turns, as one would expect from Kate Atkinson. Some might find the story a little fey, perhaps, but I lapped it up and feel bereft now it's over.

Staggering
I find the inter- twining of lives and stories absolutely remarkable. So clever as to be mind bending. The narration makes the stage complete. Just wonderful.

Excellent book
Another gem from KA. An unusual story which tackles many difficult issues which in the early post war years were never spoken of but carried on behind closed doors causing distress and anxiety to many. One of the authors best and most beautifully read/ performed.
