About this listen

It’s a dark day for the earth realms. Will it be the last?

Sorcerer Nate Garrett lost much in the battle that devastated Asgard, but the war against darkness is far from over. He’s spent a year searching for Arthur, hell-bent on stopping the evil leader of Avalon and rescuing his friend Tommy from his clutches. Nate’s investigation brings him to Washington, DC, where he finds the city under siege. Just when all hope seems lost, Layla Cassidy and her team arrive to join the fight, but Avalon’s deadly plan to conquer the earth realm is underway.

Meanwhile, Mordred is on a quest to find allies in the upcoming war against Avalon, hoping to find Arthur and stop him before it’s too late.

As the rebellion forces close in on Arthur, each of them know this could be their last fight. But with Arthur massing an unstoppable army of his own, will Nate’s fury be enough to defeat him once and for all?

what a great finale!

Heartbreak, love and triumph all rolled into one great book, and not necessarily in that order. A fantastic ending to a great triple series.

Loved it!

It can be hard to keep die hard fans happy as a series progresses but I'm delighted to say McHugh achieves this with this thoroughly satisfying book.

It has your usual plot twists that turn you around and the character development is heartwarming without being insincere.

There are moments where your heart is in your throat or breaking with the character and the story keeps on at a great pace.

All I can say is, well done on a difficult line well-walked.

Amazing

I can’t believe we’ve finally reached the end of Nate & co’s story. They are fantastic characters and the story throughout all of the books has remained consistently fabulous. I look forward to the next Mr. McHugh well done you

slightly disappointed

well this was in no way a bad book, it was a little disappointing. everything had led up to this point, Nate was this super powerful sorcerer, death personified. But he fizzled out into something more lucky, and beneficial of the sacrifices of others, not quiet what we were led to believe

Hello darkness my old friend...

There were mixed emotions with this one. Nate's adventures have been a welcome getaway over the past four years or so and knowing this was the last instalment meant it was tinged with some sadness.

The result was never in question, from elsewhere - "Journey before destination..." And it was always going to be about that journey and what the collateral damage would be. Also, would he be able to protect friends and family? Would he be able to find Erebus and thank him in person?

Well, no spoilers from me on that journey to the end game. All I can say is that it was something of a surprise in that the pace was much more steady than previously despite journeying across several realms again following the breadcrumbs to Arthur and Merlin. I think that journey could maybe have been made a little longer as some of the behind the scenes plot points kind of get rushed over with the bad guy monologuing rather than finding out the finer detail behind them (particularly as some hark back as far as book one).

I do like the multiple PoV style with the Rebellion books with the three way split again between Nate, Mordred and Layla, but from the Audiobook standpoint, I still don't like having a narrator for each and for me this one misses Elizabeth Knowelden badly (Moira Quirk does a good job but we have five books of previous character development lost). What really bothers me with this particular audiobook (beyond the loss of character continuity by using multiple narrators) is that a great deal of the non-native English speaking characters (notably Norse & Mediterranean) seem to have migrated to Wales and Ireland when not narrated by Simon Mattacks.

So, to summarise, loved the story, would have preferred the audiobook to have featured just Simon Mattacks & Elizabeth Knowelden.

Fitting Finish.

These interlinked series have kept me entertained for year's now. The next one pre-ordered as soon as possible.
This feels like the end with the way it wrapped up and it is to all intents and purposes very well sawn up. The story and narration are as alway exceptional. The characters have developed via all the spin offs to a point that there feels like multiple main characters. Just a fitting climax to an outstanding series. I just hope that some of the characters can continue in there own spin off or maybe a more in depth prequel into creation of Nate and the horsemen.
