About this listen
A junkie lies dead in an Edinburgh squat, spread-eagled, cross-like on the floor, between two burned-down candles, a five-pointed star daubed on the wall above. Just another dead addict - until John Rebus begins to chip away at the indifference, treachery, deceit and sleaze that lurks behind the facade of the Edinburgh familiar to tourists. Only Rebus seems to care about a death which looks more like a murder every day, about a seductive danger he can almost taste, appealing to the darkest corners of his mind...

Average murder caper
Maybe it was too soon after I listened to the first Rebus novel, but this didn't really grab me.

Great story
A really good story, well planned out with plenty twists to keep you guessing. Some of the accents were a bit ropey but all in all I really enjoyed this.

Not up to standard
Enjoyable, but I felt that it wasn't as good as Mr Rankin's usual writing.
James Macpherson brilliant as ever

Fantastic
I read the first one and now this one and can’t wait to get onto the third Rebus book. Very good detective thriller and excellently written by Rankin.

Excellent as always!
Story, characters, and narration first class, and the world-weary conclusion came as no surprise.

Good thriller
Well written story which very quickly draws the reader/listener in, and a nice ending which could leave options open for Rebus.
Still a minor niggle about the performance, which is generally excellent apart from the hesitant split pronunciation of the name Rebus at times.
I would happily listen to more of these narrations.

Good listen
I’m going right back to the start with Rebus. I left the series years ago because the character got too sad and repetitive. Looking back it’s interesting how simply it all started. Ok listen but not as good as I remembered.
