About this listen

Ever since the Bommarito sisters were little girls, their mother, River, has written them a letter on pink paper when she has something especially important to impart. And this time, the message is urgent and impossible to ignore - River requires open-heart surgery, and Isabelle and her sisters are needed at home to run the family bakery and take care of their brother and ailing grandmother.

Isabelle has worked hard to leave Trillium River, Oregon, behind as she travels the globe taking award-winning photographs. It's not that Isabelle hates her family. On the contrary, she and her sisters Cecilia, an outspoken kindergarten teacher, and Janie, a best-selling author, share a deep, loving bond. And all of them adore their brother, Henry, whose disabilities haven't stopped him from helping out at the bakery and bringing good cheer to everyone in town.

But going home again has a way of forcing open the secrets and hurts that the Bommaritos would rather keep tightly closed. Working together to look after Henry and save their flagging bakery, Isabelle and her sisters begin to find answers to questions they never knew existed, unexpected ways to salve the wounds of their childhoods, and the courage to grasp surprising new chances at happiness.

definitely worth your time

Persevere through the first few chapters as it doesn't feel like it's going to be much of a story. The narrator is a bit different when the book starts, but after those first chapters, she nails it. her tones and voice changes are so appropriate to the tone. Truly one of the most beautifully written stories. You will feel like you are part of this family, you will feel their hurt and pain and you will want the book to carry on. Prepare for very explicit details which are very disturbing. You will feel anger and you will feel sadness. definitely, one of my best reads/ listen. Pack the tissues in

Henry’s sisters

I loved this book, I wasn’t sure at first but kept listening. The despair, pain, laughter and fierce loyalty to each other, (despite their fights) but especially to Henry. I loved that no one got away with hurting Henry. I laughed and I cried. Brilliant book.

A heartbreaking, heartwarming story

This book made me laugh and cry, sometimes back to back. It told the tale of a family who went through difficulties and found their strengths together. The narrator was brilliant and told the story well.
I loved it so much that I've listened to it twice.

Family relations at their worst and their best

I found this story quite emotional in places especially towards the end. it's quite shocking in places with raw and painful scenes but I found myself really engaged with the characters and the way that their lives were intwined.
