About this listen
Rule #1: No hot guys.
It might sound ridiculous. I get it. It kind of was, but college was supposed to be my sanctuary. It was my place to start over. The rumors, the whispers, and the jealousy I endured through high school would all be gone.
No one would know me at college.
Rule #2: No drama.
I'd major in pre-law. I'd make a few loyal friends. Everything would be easy-breezy. No one was going to use me or hurt me. I wouldn't let them.
Rule #3: New year. New place. New me.
Right?
Wrong.
And all because of Shay Coleman.
Football captain and quarterback, he was the big guy on campus. The cocky guy in my political science class with a smirk. I hated him on sight...and he was about to break all my rules.
Hate to Love You is a full-length standalone. There are elements that deal with the dark side of college.

Hard topic
It’s a special book, with a lot of difficult topics. I have been listening to it a couple of times, I like the HEA, even if she a little bit annoying sometimes, but it is a young adult/late teen and can be a little annoying.

More college drama and angst!
No one does High School/College drama and angst quite like Tijan! She is one of my favourite authors and I listen to her books over and over. This book does not disappoint.
Kennedy is feisty, guarded, snarky and one of life’s introverts. She just wants to keep to herself, do the whole college classes thing, maybe make a couple of friends but mostly wants to stay under the radar, and she really isn’t up for any boy drama. Trouble is she seems to have attracted the attention of the college’s star quarterback, and she’s done it by being her usual chippy, snarky self. To add insult to injury she appears to be attracted to him, which doesn’t suit her plan of staying below the radar at all! I loved Kennedy’s internal monologues, she seems to understand how ridiculous she can be, but doesn’t mind so much. Thing is though, underneath all her bluster she’s quite insecure, and as she and Shay start to grow closer her college and life plans fall into chaos.
As with all Tijan books this isn’t just an upbeat rom/com, and there are some really serious issues in the storyline. Rape, physical assault, teen pregnancy and abortion, and stalking, and mental health are all included. There’s discussion around a woman’s place, and the disparity between men and women for what appears to be very similar behaviours.
The story sees Kennedy and Shay navigate some very serious events with the help of friends and family, but there is also humour along the way. I think this book would have benefitted from a dual POV but it still works as it is.
Savannah Peachwood does an excellent job narrating, and brings the story to life beautifully.
If you like college drama and angst then this is worth a credit.

Nah this ain't it
The book is pathetic. There is no point to try to explore such serious topics only to dumb it down this way.

DNF
Terrible handling of a very serious subject. How did the protagonist end up making it all about her, I just couldn’t care less about her.
