About this listen

The new Detective Inspector Hardcastle mystery - When the body of actress Victoria Hart is found in the early hours of Christmas Day, Hardcastle and Marriotts investigations lead them to the Beaux Belles revue, where a scantily clad Victoria persuaded young men to enlist with the promise of a kiss. It seems the alluring actress had many admirers, and when the recruiting sergeant is found dead, a link to the army can no longer be ignored....

Editor reviews

David Thorpe’s silky smooth British lilt adds a sense of authenticity to Graham Ison’s fifth Inspector Hardcastle mystery, which transports the listener to 1914 England as the titular detective and his beleaguered partner, Marriott, unexpectedly become mired in a web of military intrigue as they investigate the mysterious death of a seductive Beaux Hall revue performer.

Thorpe brilliantly captures Hardcastle's trademark surliness as well as his and Marriott’s witty, rapid-fire exchanges in this distinctively British throwback mystery.

A really convincing lead character

One of the things I enjoy about this series is the author’s portrayal of a middle aged man in the Edwardian era. Hardcastle is grumpy, paternalistic and isn’t someone you’d want to get stuck in a lift with but he feels authentic; a man born in the Victorian world who often struggles with the modern world.

Enjoyable period crime story

I am enjoying this series of easy listening stories. Very well performed and not too taxing.

Easy listening and enjoyable

This is the second Hardcastle audiobook I have listened to, both of which I have enjoyed. I thought The narration was very good. There were a couple of things I didn’t like about the story but as long as you aren’t going to take it too seriously it’s well worth a try.

I shall be listening to more.
