Summary
Tristram Abberley was an acclaimed English poet of the 1930s whose legendary reputation was sealed when he died fighting for the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War. Nearly 50 years later, his sister Beatrix is brutally murdered in her seaside cottage.
Her family are stunned by the crime - especially Beatrix's niece, Charlotte Ladram. But Charlotte has little time to mourn her aunt as 50 years of secrets begin to unravel. Beatrix is the victim of a dark conspiracy, one that her loved ones are powerless to defeat.
A harrowing quest for answers begins, one that uncovers a shocking tale of wartime greed and treachery and a vendetta seemingly without end.....

Deserves 10 stars!
One of my favourite of his books. Complex and a real web of stories. Highly recommend.

Dialogue Problems
Within the compelling stories of this author, we seem to have 'heroes' who are bossed about and who have no power of articulation. I find that annoying.

Ponderous
Very good plot but slow and ponderous. I struggled to finish but wanted to finish it although it would have been much more enjoyable with 15% fewer pages

Kept me guessing
The story kept me guessing right till the end. As I knew the geographical area in England well and had visited the Spanish one on holiday it drew me into the story. Great!

Goddard at his best
I have read / listened to a few of Robert Goddard books and this one did not disappoint. He has a knack of drawing the reader in with plenty of twists and turns along the way.

Robert Goddard is head & shoulders above the rest.
Even though this story is dated it didn’t detract from my enjoyment. This story is told with such depth & imagination, no chance of ‘guessing the ending’ - always so many twists, turns & new directions . I could listen to his books for ever❤️

Classic Goddard
I enjoyed this novel mostly for the wonderful reading by John Tefler. What an amazingly versatile actor, what a range of accents! Even women’s voices were passable, the French and the Welsh accents absolutely spot on, Spanish slightly less so, much great effort.
The story is classic Goddard, complex, somewhat convoluted, but still a good yarn. There are bad guys and good guys and not much in between.
My one small quibble with the story is that much of it is being “explained” through dialogue. Dialogue is great when there is conflict in the here and now between two or more person, but when the story is told through “telling” rather than showing, it loses out. For the same reason it feels lacking in setting. As a reader I want to imagine myself in the setting where the action takes place. A little help with this from the author would make the novel more real and believable.

Ingenious!
It is a privilege to be read to by the velvety voice of John Telfer and when combined with the ingenuity of
Robert Goddard’s imagination, makes for compulsive listening. I shall now search for more of the same.
