About this listen

An escape - that's exactly what Birdie Devaine needs when witches around the world publicly announce their existence.

Instead of performing for the sold-out crowd at her world-famous magic show in Vegas, Birdie runs away from the dazzling lights to her hometown in Mississippi. Back to the town she swore off over a century ago.

She thinks she has it all planned out - keeping busy with renovating an old beautiful house and eventually fading away from the spotlight. But the house has its secrets, including the haunted cemetery that Birdie is now responsible for. It doesn't help when her nosy neighbor catches on to Birdie's big secret - that she's a true witch with real magical powers.

But when the busybody turns up dead on Birdie's new property, the former southern debutante becomes the prime suspect in the case. Cue the ladies of Witch Hazel Lane - a group of women who've stuck together for 40 years. With their help, Birdie is on the hunt for the real killer. Will they help get her off the hook? Will Birdie's true nature stay secret? And what is she supposed to do with the stray dog that refuses to leave her house?

Spirits and witches in the graveyard

I enjoyed this book, however I think the mystery did get a little bit lost with all the character development, it's set up nicely for the series though. I normally prefer the author sticks with the mystery side of the story but I actually liked the way it was done, explaining the magic and how Birdie isn't who or what you think she is. I liked the characters and can see the banter between the characters is going to add some fun to the series. There wasn't a great many suspects but it played out well giving you clues along the way. A series I will be joining again.
Las Vegas is the perfect place to show off your magic skills, that is unless your act is real and you are using your witch powers to do the magic and a group of witches has just told the world witches are real. For Birdie this means running away to try and find a quieter life. The problem is she buys a run down house sight unseen and the same day the nosy next door neighbour gets killed in her back garden. Birdie has been around for a long time and doesn't let people get close for fear that they will learn her secret but in Witch Hazel lane she has no choice but to get to know her neighbours, as one of them might just be the killer or could they become her friends?
It took me a while to get use to the accent of the narrator, which did sort of make may of the characters sound the same but by the end she won me around.

Well read

Loved the story, funny in places and well constructed. The narrator has a very pleasing accent which leads to easy listening.
