Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Film tie-in originally published as The Good Shepherd.

Soon to be a major motion picture starring Tom Hanks.

It's 1942. America have just joined the war.

Greyhound, an international convoy of 37 allied ships, is in operation. As Captain Ernest Krause leads his first command of a US destroyer, the convoy ploughs through icy, submarine-infested North Atlantic seas.

All the while hotly pursued by wolf packs of Nazi U-boats.

Grappling with his newfound superiority and haunting self-doubt in 48 hours of desperate peril, Captain Krause's hopeless mission is doomed to fail.

But armed with extraordinary courage and grit, hope may just be on the horizon....

A tense WW2 story

A very intense story of one Convoy in the battle of the Atlantic. The description of the attacks on the subs puts you there on the bridge.
Only downside is some of the chapters are very long, also 2 hours.

Intense and gripping

Intense story that almost never slows down.
CS I brilliant in mediating the always present anxiety over the responsibility a man in Ernie’s position wore on his shoulders.
CS is subtle in his storytelling about these unsung heroes of WW2, in contradiction to the more grand stories about the war.

Jim does an excellent performance and is very pleasant to listen to.

The movie is even better with Tom Hanks bringing the main character to life in an excellent way.

Riveting story

This audiobook really does put you right on the bridge of a destroyer in the Atlantic just before a battle to protect a convoy from a U boat pack. It’s an edge of the seat, exciting account, well narrated at just the right pace. You don’t want to pause the story once started- so much is happening..

Very Well....

I enjoyed it in that the depth and understanding of the situation the CO finds himself certainly has more weight compared to the film based on this book though i did find the repetitive "very well" comment exhausting :P

VERY WELL

never have i heard the words 'very well' said so many times, however that's all part of the delirious repetition of Krauss' ordeal. gripping stuff, even better than the movie, which lead me here.

Very good

Really enjoyed this book. The author really captured the tension and demands of the people who defended the Atlantic convoys during ww2. A realistic and gritty account. Should make an excellent film.

Very Good better than the Film

Well the Film was good and this audible was just as good if not better, you get into the mind off the Captain and see his decision making. Also the person reading the audible is first class and an voice you can connect with, disregard the negative about this book and you will be surprised, it’s something I will listen to again. Also it’s
Unbelievable the sacrifices these young people did for our country a debt we can never pay back. 5 stars plus for me

Reflecting thr sentiments of the 1940s

A well written novel of the hellish conditions on the atlantic convoys during WWII. CS Forester is not a man of grand gestures or flamboyant feelings which this novel expresses. It is very British in its outlook on life although the main character is american.
