Hera is in her mid-twenties, which seems young to everyone except people in their mid-twenties.
Since leaving school, she has been trying to kick and scream into existence a life she cares about, but with little success so far.
Until she meets Arthur.
He works with her, he is older than her, he is also married. But in her soulless office - the large cold room she feels destined to spend her life in - he is a source of much-needed sustenance.
And though Hera has previously dated women, she soon falls headlong into a workplace romance that will quickly consume her life.
Laugh-out-loud funny, deeply moving and whip-smart, Green Dot is a story about the terrible allure of wanting something that promises nothing and the winding, torturous, often hilarious journey we take in deciding who we are and who we want to be.©2024 Madeleine Gray (P)2024 Allen & Unwin

Amazing reading- very convincing
A surprisingly fresh take on a tale as old as time. The performance brings the Australian context to life completely.

Heartbreak
Sometimes this seemed lightweight and not for a person of my mature years. But the description of heartbreak, longing, the pointlessness and pain of trying to live without the person who is 'bad' for you yet makes life worthwhile is painfully accurate.

Why do all married men like Springsteen
This was creepily resonant, if I was a good writer I could have written it. ALL married men are the same it seems, I will leave it at that.

Funny and heart-breaking
Amazing character, so raw, honest, and funny. She will stay with even after the book ends. And brilliantly read.

Not for me...
I started 'Green Dot' after seeing and hearing great things about the book. I sadly only got a few chapters in, I found it quite boring and the narrator didn't help ( sorry)

A perfect book
“Every sentence sparkles” says Caitlin Moran and she’s not wrong. Hera isn’t an instantly likable character but she grows on you and you come to care about her. It’s about the lies we ignore when we just want to feel something, for it to be real, even when we know, and everyone else knows, it is not. Arthur is weak and terrible but you keep hoping. The narrator is just right too. Can’t really find fault with this book.

Could relate to the main character
Is it just me or have we all felt like the main character at some point in our lives and in certain relationships?
I would have really loved to have heard to perspective of the love interest or to know who in his world knew what (sorry to be cryptic, trying not to spoil the story)
At times I was so frustrated but know the decision the main character makes are so similar to those I have also made IRL - she was me!
Light hearted and humorous but also has some deep and serious themes.

Full of depth, harrowingly realistic and very well written
Harrowingly realistic portrayal of the main character’s perspective, the emotion is tangible throughout. Very clever writing, to be able to get across such variations of subtlety and strength of the feelings and thoughts of the character in each moment. Really impressed with the whole book. I enjoyed the narrator and at times found her voice a bit grating, yet once I got used to it (sounded better after reducing the listening speed), I think that the narrator’s articulation was perfect for getting across the character’s intricate emotions.
