About this listen

The complete, unabridged audiobook of Gormenghast .

Enter the world of Gormenghast...the vast, crumbling castle to which the 77th Earl, Titus Groan, is Lord and heir. A gothic labyrinth of roofs and turrets, cloisters and corridors, stairwells and dungeons, it is also the cobwebbed kingdom of Byzantine government and age-old rituals, a world primed to implode beneath the weight of centuries of intrigue, treachery, manipulation and murder.

Gormenghast is more than a sequel to Titus Groan - it is an enrichment and deepening of that book. The fertility of incident, character and rich atmosphere combine in a tour de force that ranks as one of the 20th century's most remarkable feats of imaginative writing.

Great narration

Really enjoyed this book, quite a different style to Titus Groan. I particularly love this narration, Saul Reichlin does a great job of bringing the characters alive with all the different voices.

An engrossing return to gormenghast

I enjoyed the richly imagined world and luxurious prose of the first book and came to accept it as a series of vignettes without any real direction. This sequel starts very slowly indeed (I could happily have done with less of the professors) but in the second half it actually has a fairly brisk and engaging plot.

Saul Reichlin again gives an astonishing performance. His character voices are superb, particularly Dr Prunesquallor, subtlety revealing the tender heart beneath the garrulous facetiousness.

A true masterpiece

The poses is unique and beautiful, like the story itself. If you are looking for a page turner, stay away. If you are looking for a book to lovingly hold to you chest, this is for you…..

Gormengast

I enjoy this more than Titus Groan. The story moves quickly with out loosing any of the beautiful descriptive poetry of the first.

Brilliant

Love every second of this book as good if not better then the first. The writing and characters are great. The story is a series of set pieces which has no consequence, but just a veneer of lays upon lays that serve up idea's...and boy! you never to the bottom of any of them such is the brilliance in the writing. It's superbly read by Saul Reichlin. l'm looking forward to the last in the trilogy Titus Alone. Andrew

I loved the original. this felt like a long haul

Narrator is great. 1st book in the series is better. a haul to finish, maybe a more pleasurable read since its so descriptive and nicely worded, you kind of.miss that with narration.
