About this listen

A classic work of female psychology that uses seven archetypcal goddesses as a way of describing behavior patterns and personality traits is being introduced to the next generation of listeners with a new introduction by the author.

Psychoanalyst Jean Bolen's career soared in the early 1980s when Goddesses in Everywoman was published. Thousands of women readers became fascinated with identifying their own inner goddesses and using these archetypes to guide themselves to greater self-esteem, creativity, and happiness.

Bolen's radical idea was that just as women used to be unconscious of the powerful effects that cultural stereotypes had on them, they were also unconscious of powerful archetypal forces within them that influence what they do and how they feel, and which account for major differences among them. Bolen believes that an understanding of these inner patterns and their interrelationships offers reassuring, true-to-life alternatives that take women far beyond such restrictive dichotomies as masculine/feminine, mother/lover, careerist/housewife. And she demonstrates in this book how understanding them can provide the key to self-knowledge and wholeness.

Dr. Bolen introduced these patterns in the guise of seven archetypal goddesses, or personality types, with whom all women could identify, from the autonomous Artemis and the cool Athena to the nurturing Demeter and the creative Aphrodite, and explains how to decide which to cultivate and which to overcome, and how to tap the power of these enduring archetypes to become a better "heroine" in one's own life story.

I found this a fun, fascinating delve into the psychology behind Greek myths and the goddesses applicability to every modern women. I was surprised how relevant it felt and how much I could see goddesses in my friends, family and myself. A must read for anyone exploring female energy and agency in their own life.

A book everywoman should read

I am so glad this book was written. I am still blown away by the paralelism between Greek mythology and our reality.

Fascinating!

I'm sure the synchronicity of this book falling into my lap was utter universal magic! Bolens exploration of goddesses as archetypal representations of the psyche came to me at a desperate and heartbreaking time where many goddesses warred within me. Persephone, Artemis, Aphrodite & Demeter/Hera. I am so grateful for her wise words of wisdom during this tumultuous time of intense love/indecision/fear/loss/heartache/grief/transformation & awakening. A book to keep by the side for a lifetime. I will be embodying and learning from these goddesses to embrace, heal, unearth phases throughout the seasons of my subconscious and actively write an authentically aligned narrative with agency in my own heroine's journey. (Also, highly recommend for those healing from C-PTSD and BPD). And you can bet your bottom, i'll be picking up everything she has ever written.

Feminist Jungian Perspective

Well worth a listen to, it’s so refreshing to hear such a Jungian perspective from a strong independent women. I got this with my membership but ended up buying a physical copy, as well as “Gods in Everyman”.

Trivial and unprofound.

The most basic knowledge of Greek mythology and/or Jung would make this text worthless. So trivial, unprofound and poorly written. I could not finish it.
