About this listen

An important book
What made the experience of listening to Gehen, ging, gegangen the most enjoyable?
Erpenbeck's story is courageous, subtle and beautifully written. I was hooked from the beginning. The book, set in present-day Berlin, makes me see the city and its struggles in a new light. At the same time, the current issues around the "refugee crisis" are presented in the context of Germany's past, including the ideologies of the Third Reich, the GDR and the transformation after the country's reunification. The main character, a retired classics professor, also makes interesting observations of the current moment to Europe's ancient history. Besides this intellectual inspiration, I also felt really drawn to the characters. The book works on so many levels – I strongly recommend it.
What does Friedhelm Ptok bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
A beautiful, sensitive reading. Couldn't get enough of it!
