About this listen
Frank took a long slow drag on a cigarette. "I’ve only got two pieces of advice for people who wanna listen to this case file. First of all, if you’re easily offended, or of a nervous disposition, keep your money, spend it on…what does two bucks buy you today, a box of matches?"
He choked on cigarette smoke, steadying himself with a shot of bourbon. "Ahhh, but if you decide to listen to it, whatever you, don’t listen to it sitting on the pan."

BOOK REVIEW
Review for 'Frank Midgette's Case Files: The Dead Pan' by Oliver Strong.
Publication date 29th August 2022.
This is the first book I have read by this author.
This novel consists of 10 chapters. The chapters are short in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is written in a mix of third and first person perspective and the main protagonist is Frank Midgette. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything. To have the benefit of both first and third person perspective ensures you don't miss out on anything.
IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED THEN LOOK NO FURTHER!!
The synopsis of this book states "First of all if you’re easily offended or of a nervous disposition, keep your money, spend it on … damn what does two bucks buy you today, a box of matches?’". I really couldn't agree more with that statement!! If you are easily offended then this book really is not for you!!! It has got to be one of the most politically incorrect books I have ever read and I absolutely LOVE it!!! It is a breathe of fresh air to have a book that isn't limited in all the PC rubbish which has gone beyond now!! I have never read a book that had me spitting out my tea in laughter so quickly!!! Frank is one of the worst yet best Lieutenant's I have ever "met" and God forbid you say his surname wrong as he will blow your head off for it!!! Frank takes absolutely no cr@p and during this fast paced read you will see him blowing people's heads off (not all only for getting his surname wrong), sticking his hand down a toilet that has just been filled, get arrested for sexual assault and impersonating a police officer getting him locked up with a Freddie Mercury wannabe, insulting his seniors, drinking on the job and so much more!! Enter innocent Lieutenant Manuel Montoya who becomes Frank's partner getting stuck in the car with a man who stinks to high heaven (Frank) and discovering his new Captain and Lieutenant have a habit of being involved in protection rackets, extortion and illegal sale of body parts and that's without bets being made to see how long he will survive!! This has got to be one of the most hilarious books I have ever read!!
I read approximately half of this book on kindle and listened to approximately half on audio book. I must also give a huge congratulations to the narrator Brian Hess who not only brought the storyline to life by really portraying the emotions through his voice but by doing absolutely fantastic impressions so a HUGE congratulations Brian! I cannot imagine that this was anywhere near an easy feat!!! I am looking forward to discovering more books read by yourself as you definitely have a perfect "book" voice!! I sometimes struggle to absorb the storyline through an audio book but if you are the same as me I can promise you will not have that problem with this amazing narrator!!
A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Oliver who wasn't afraid to make a book that is the opposite of PC!! AN absolutely hilarious read and a breathe of fresh air! I'm looking forward to seeing what you come out with next!!
Overall an unforgettable rollercoaster ride filled with the craziest adventures with the most insulting lieutenant you will ever meet!!
Genres covered in this book include Crime Fiction, Hardboiled, Adventure, Thriller, Humour and Crime amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as you, your friends, your dog, your great uncles cousins friend, your 29th cousin removed, your grandparents, your mother in law. I could go on but seriously everyone should read this book!!
82 pages
This book is just £1.29 to purchase on kindle or free on kindle unlimited and £5.31 in paperback via Amazon at time of review which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!
Rated 5/5 (I LOVED it )

Medium: Audiobook
Runtime: 2hr 54mins
Narrator: Brian Hess
Firstly, copy sent by the author in exchange for an honest review. Sent with the caveat of the book “not being very PC”.
Second, if you are sensitive to non PC attitudes, this book really is not for you. The protagonist is a sexist, racist, misogynistic jerk… but he gets the job done.
This is probably a “novella” length tale. However sets the tone for Frank’s world and I hope several more adventures await!!
As I’ve said elsewhere, the beauty in writing a shorter story is that the author has to be quick witted, snappy and wise with their words in order to create an equally fulfilling story as a full length novel might.
The story is relayed in both the third and first person, which can create confusion but instead, in Frank’s case draws the reader/listener into how he works. You can’t overlook his flaws because they’re all too glaring and I must say, very well written!
We find Frank in his apartment amid mess and chaos and we leave him in his apartment… still in chaos, having done a great few days work in between.
The story is peppered with realistic (if a little choice) dialogue. The story is a mix of crime and police procedure and has a dash of hard edged humour.
Brian Hess’ narration was a gifted performance told in the style of Frank Miller’s “Sin City”. However the sound quality was not quite right. It tbh sounded echo-y at times and different sound levels at others. Didn’t detract from the story though.
