Summary

How would you like to read minds? Freeze time itself? See any place in the world through a mirror?

It may sound glamorous and exciting, but to the teenagers manifesting these talents, it is the beginning of a terrifying adventure that will challenge everything they thought they knew.

In a sleepy California town, five teenagers discover that they are part of a secret struggle, with talents that none of them ever imagined. Before they know it, they're plunged into an ancient battle of good versus evil that will question everything they know about the world, and themselves.

Can they unlock the past to survive in their new reality? Will this disparate assortment of teenagers come together when it matters most and rise to be the warriors they were meant to be? They will all be given the choice - join us or die. They won't have long to decide, and the lives of everyone they love are hanging in the balance.

Fascinating premise in a well delivered story

Warriors being reborn into different bodies and even genders spanning our entire history. What a great idea. The relationship dynamic this brings is fascinating for the existing warriors and we have a really strong mentor of a good guy balanced against a powerful bad guy in the background who is suitably menacing. His henchmen, the brothers, really steal the show in terms of being both bad and revelling in it. The newly developing warriors are also all really interesting and different enough that all of their backgrounds make for a great listen. I enjoyed it from start to finish.

I enjoyed the narration, it gave pace and the narrator has a great voice to listen too for both the story and each character which also brought the story to life.

Really good!

Ancient warriors reincarnated as teenagers

This was a new author for me and it was the premise of the story that first drew me to this book, it seemed like the mix of ideas had a lot of potential and this did turn out to be the case. The author mixes some familiar ideas such as the mismatched group of kids gaining mysterious powers with an interesting take on the origin of those powers which are the result of these kids being the reincarnation of some ancient warriors who are locked in a struggle through the ages with another faction.

When you have a book like this with a clear ensemble of main characters, how well they are realised is often the make or break item for that book, even more than the plot and the author does a good job with fleshing out his cast of young heroes without pushing this book down the typical YA routes. While the cast, both goodies and baddies work well, the plot is also an enjoyable origin story with sufficient levels of threat to push these new heroes to discover who they really are now.

The narrator deals well with having to provide distinct voices for a range of characters and his tone and delivery work well to enhance this book.

Overall, an interesting origin story, I will definitely look out for where this author takes these characters in any subsequent books.
