During World War I, before America entered the war, many Americans volunteered to fight for the French. These valiant volunteers fought in all arms of the French services and not least in the air. Formed into air units of their own, these Americans trained, fought, and died together, fighting for freedom and liberty.
This audiobook was written by one of these volunteer fighters. As well as this first-person narrative, which describes the training and the combat, the latter chapters include letters written by and between the pilots.

The whole story about the American pilots
Many think that aerial combat in wooden aircraft during WW1 doesn't deserve recognition! Listening to this audio tape reveals different. At first WW1 was an "adventure"ending by Christmas. Whereas those pilots, On both sides, had chivalry and bravery. Simply because they were NOT allowed parachutes due to imparing a pilots view of leaving his flaming wooden coffin. they didn't have self sealing fuel tanks and no protection from bullets. This tape certainly puts things into their proper perspective with regards the bravery of all pilots during WW1. They were not only fighting each other in unstable wooden aircraft, they were fighting the odds of survival. As they didn't have much going in their favour. Listen to what is spoken in this brilliant tape and put yourself in the place of the mentioned pilot, over the trenches, in a slow wooden fighter with NO other aids to help but your own eye sight. A well worth listening to recording of how these pilots lived and died in a never ending continuous aerial engagements over the trenches.
