Summary

From a childhood spent making smoke bombs, killing wasps and carving soap in '70s Kent, Harry Hill then found himself in charge of hundreds of sick people as a junior doctor. Out of his depth and terrified, he chucked it all in to pursue his dream of becoming a stand-up comedian. Battling his way through the '90s comedy circuit, he quickly rose to become a household name and one of the UK's most celebrated comics, almost making it to the top of the showbiz tree....

From being chased around a car park by an angry heckler, getting fired from Capital Radio and watching every episode of Freaky Eaters, to a bizarre assassination attempt and cutting up Simon Cowell's trousers, Harry takes an honest and hilarious look at the ups and downs of his life and career through the lens of what didn't go right.

He shares his secrets on how to be a great comedian, finding joy in failure and creativity in struggle, whilst never forgetting that life is short....

Finished it in 2 days....

It's not hugely funny but well written and very interesting.
The behind the scenes stories about his TV shows, stand up and the failings of Stars in their Eyes are particular highlights
Harry's narration is great throughout

interesting autobiography

I enjoyed listening to this. I wouldn't say it was hilarious but I like Harry Hill and was interested in how he made his name. I did love the Harry Hill jokes at the start of every chapter. Such an original!

Loved this

One of the funniest autobiographies I've listened to. I particularly enjoyed the reminder of what it was like to be a child in the 70s/80s.

Lovely stuff

I honestly ADORE Harry Hill, so when he mentioned people who were a bit snitty with him I felt instantly protective! This was such a great listen and Harry has a really laid back delivery style. There are some tv and theatre shows that I wish I could watch now. I saw the audience with......... episode he talks about and I loved it, but I could see some celebs in the audience being petulant and rude! Why go along if you don't actually 'get it' ??
Harry is so charming and self deprecating and I love it! I find him so funny and I can only assume that those other comics and celebs that were hostile toward him are just jealous of his ability to light up a room.
At the end of the book he quips that he may have confused or disappointed his fans at some point, but he has never confused or disappointed me and I have just one question..............What news of biscuits??

While away the hours with Harry

Excellent memoir with Harry’s narration smooth and calm throughout making every chapter thoroughly enjoyable. Harry’s story is one to sit back and while away time as he takes you through so many years of his world with plenty to chuckle about. I’d recommend it as one to get, being harmless good fun and very interesting to listen to.

Funny Read

I really enjoyed listening to Harry Hill's story read by Matthew Hall. It gives good insight into the performer's need for applause, it's an addiction. (Even Cynthia Erivo describes the feeling in a YouTube interview about I Can't Sing). it's a pity the musical wasn't recorded, I think I'd have watched it with glee from the comfort of my sofa.
The slog through the comedy circuit is a tough one but the burning desire to perform is real.
Harry's style is madcap and surreal and should still be out there; it's niche but would have its own cult following, he thinks out of the box and occasionally off the planet. He makes me laugh and this made several of my most recent walks fly by.
