Summary
From Chris Brookmyre, winner of the Theakstons and McIllvanney awards for Black Widow, comes a standalone psychological thriller full of twists, lies and betrayal.
One family, two holidays, one devastating secret. To new nanny Amanda, the Temple family seem to have it all: the former actress; the famous professor; their three successful grown-up children.
But like any family, beneath the smiles and hugs there lurks far darker emotions.
Sixteen years earlier, little Niamh Temple died while they were on holiday in Portugal. Now, as Amanda joins the family for a reunion at their seaside villa, she begins to suspect one of them might be hiding something terrible.... And suspicion is a dangerous thing.

Another cracker from Brookmyre
I’m at a bit of a loss to understand some of the negative comments on the book. Yes there are themes of incest and pedophilia in the book but I hate to inform the critics but these things exist in the world. Brookmyres books often contain many, many murders so I find it hard to grasp why other crimes warrant some of the comments. As usual there are twists and turns until the very end, the baddies get their comeuppance, what’s not to like?
And Jack Parlabane has a tiny bit part!

A great winding tale
Chris has done it again, believable characters, a twisting plot and some guest appearances of some old friends.
Loved the book and the narrator.

Enjoyable
I enjoyed this book. Many reviews complain about pacing but I quite enjoyed the long setting of scene getting to know the awful characters. It doesn’t matter if you crack it straight away or by the end, I’m not sure why this is an immediate criticism anyway as it’s not really a whodunnit. There are derivative points but it doesn’t spoil the story overall. The narrator was fine, except for terrible children’s voices and a Canadian accent. The ending is very silly with a no, don’t go there, but he did. Don’t want to give it away!

Bit slow and emotionally tough but worth it
Tough listen in places due to story line but he’s a deft writer and manages this subject very well.
Compelling and very worth my time.

Returned before I finished
Not sure if it was because the narrator's voice was too high pitched or the story was just too mixed up to follow.
I gave 3 stars only because I didn't get past 1/3 way; but what I did listen to wasn't much more I'm afraid.

Absolutely Brilliant
I read this in 2019 but, although I knew I had enjoyed it, I had forgotten a lot of the plot. Christopher Brookmyre has never written a bad book, and this doesn't disappoint. The story is wonderful. poignant, empathic, gripping, sad, with a well thought out plot and ending. Cathleen McCarron's narration is superb and really enhances the story.
This works as a stand alone novel, but also nicely includes a nod to another well loved Brookmyre character.
I can't praise this highly enough. I'm looking forward to listening to it again in a couple of years time.
