About this listen

Extinction Rebellion (XR, for short) is an emergency response. Politics as usual, governments, as usual, have let down the peoples of the world in an extreme way: We are on course for eco-driven societal collapse, and we are extinguishing other species very rapidly. We could even end up making ourselves extinct. XR suggests that when your government is driving you and your family over a cliff, it is no longer a legitimate government. Rebellion against it is permitted - indeed, it is required. But XR is insistent that such rebellion must be nonviolent.

Critic reviews

"Rupert Read and Samuel Alexander take us deep inside the debates, tactics, and passion that have bound Extinction Rebellion together from its founding days, bringing us radical reflections from the frontlines of rebellion. If you want to understand the movement that is finally waking us up, read this book." (Kate Raworth, author of Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st-Century Economist)

"Invaluable reflections and next-step ideas right from the heart of arguably the most inspiring and important movement of the twenty first century." (Mike Berners-Lee, author of There Is No Planet B: A Handbook for the Make or Break Years)

"Everyone should read this book. It is short, and impassioned, but full of important information: above all an honest and practical plea for us to seize the moment for change urgently. It is inspirational. Please, for all our sakes, read it, and take its timely words to heart." (Iain McGilchrist, author of The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World)

Great reading

Thanks Craig for the professional job you’ve done here! Deeply appreciated by me and by many listeners, I know (because they’ve told me).

Essential listening for 2021

If you're expecting to hear behind the scenes gossip about Extinction Rebellion and its foundations, you've bought the wrong audiobook. However, if you're seriously concerned about the dire situation we find ourselves in as we edge (not even slowly) towards climate collapse then this is made for you.

Samuel Alexander's introduction sets the tone of the book perfectly. He ends by saying: "The future of Extinction Rebellion is unwritten. This book is an invitation to help write it." You can't work out where to go until you know what's come before - and this book is an interesting, thought-provoking collection, of mostly essays by Rupert Read, offering insights into XR as it formed and flourished. The 'what next' is hugely important (our future rests on us getting it right) and I certainly feel more informed after listening to this book.

I'm not generally a fan of audiobooks but in this case I feel it actually works better than reading it for yourself. There's no doubt the subject is heavy going but something about Craig Bowles voice makes it seem more accessible.

I was given a free copy of this audiobook in return for an honest review.

So disappointed

I was given this book and as a proviso had to give an honest review.
I only managed to get to chapter 10 before giving up in in frustration. This is a number of what sounds like achedemic papers put together in the form of a book. Therefore I doubt if there is any original material here.
For the chapters I read the same message was repeated over and over again until the chapters just merged into one. Yes I know global warming is a very serious matter but this is not the way to put it across in a book. Telling me 100s of times how serious this matter is just makes a poor book and the reader gets frustrated.
The narrator also talked at the reader and not to the reader. You have got to keep the listeners interest going not make them feel like they are being preached to by a severe headmaster.
Also I thought that there would be more information about ER itself given the title. Alas not.
I am totally sympathetic and support the cause of the ER but this is an opportunity missed by them to widen their appeal. I really looked forward to this book but all said and done it was not for me.
