About this listen
Channel Two predicted a blanket of snow for Thanksgiving weekend - unusual, but not alarming for the little Maine island. What comes is a blinding blizzard, and a mass disappearance of nearly every person Robby Pierce knows. He and his family flee, trying to escape the snow and the invisible forces stealing people right from the street.
Miles away, Brad Jenkins battles the same storm. Alone, he attempts to survive as snow envelops his house. When the storm breaks, Brad makes his way south to where the snow ends and the world lies empty.
Join Brad, Robby, and the other survivors as they fight to find the truth about the apocalypse and discover how to live in their new world.

Animals don't know sh*t about zippers.
Extinct is a very refreshingly different take on the coming of the end of life as we know it and the first half had this reader absolutely rivitted to the two seperate story lines - that of Robby, a young teenager living with his parents on an island off of Maine, and the other, set several months earlier, of Brad, who discovers some unpleasant stinging vines at the edge of the garden of his remote cabin in the forest. With alternating chapters about each of the protagonists, the situations become increasingly bizarre and terrifying, the tensions rise dramatically and it all seems mysterious and strange.
Eventually, the storylines converge and Bobby and Brad join forces.
And at this point, the wondering mysteries seem to deteriorate into the more conventional horror of apocalyptic tales - still different, perhaps, but without the weird drama of earlier - and loses some of the magnetic pull. The ending felt less than fully thought out, too.
But then, of course, it wasn't really the ending. With more books to come after, there is still time to explain all of the questions still left unresolved: about the plants and the holes and men from the government, the strange markings on a cellar wall, the constant falling snow, the darkness things and the constant theories from the rather overly pushy teenage boy.
Throughout it all, the narration of Kyle Tait remains consistently good, his slightly gruff voice slow paced, echoing the text, emphasizing the atmosphere and giving good individual voice to each of the protagonists.
My thanks to the rights holder of Extinct who, at my request freely gifted me a complimentary copy, via Audiobook Boom. It started so well, eery and fascinating, drawing me into it's terrifyingly unusual story. But it wasn't sustained and so much was unanswered, replaced with simple apocalyptic horror, or else simply strangely ignored. Perhaps a later continuation will resolve these anomalies but I would have preferred less left abandoned in this volume.
Will I continue to follow Robby and Brad into book two? Not sure.

An excellent apocalyptic story fresh & different
This is excellent. I love the two different story threads. We have a young genius or at least someone with a perfect memory facing the ultimate storm and disappearances of everyone. Contrasting this a man living remotely but comfortably in a cabin in the woods with an intelligent and ever growing vine. I love the contrast of the two story arcs with a both excellent. You wonder when they will meet up although both are engaging in their own rights. I really like both of these characters and all of the characters throughout. I like the way we go when the two characters stories do come together and I was hooked throughout.
The pace of the book is brilliant. Spooky and isolating at times and intense in moments. Some really great moments as well in what is a really good story. I really enjoyed the narration which gives a great sense of the characters as well as keeping the pace enjoyable and perfect for the story.
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review

Imagine
Extinct - One of Ike Hamills best works, in fact as good as Stephen King's .
Is it a horror, a thriller or a bit post apoc - it works in all those categories.
Brilliant piece of writing. I read the book a couple of years back, and just finished listening to the audiobook and have started re-listening again it's so good.
Narration is just how I imagined and paints wonderful pictures of fear & confusion.
I was given a free copy of this audiobook at my own request, and voluntarily leave this review.

I read/listen to alot of apocalyptic horror and was surprised to find a new and original storyline in this book. I am very much looking forward to the next book in the series being released on audiobook.

Intriguing but...
Started off great, keeps good pace and doesn’t get boring, good character development (for main cast) but seemed to conclude fast! A theory is suggested and it’s right here’s a fix, done! End! Far too short, ending was rushed and spoiled what could have been a fantastic book. 3 stars is generous in my opinion, but the first 3/4’s of the book was really entertaining so I feel it’s a fair rating. Maybe it was left for a sequel, if so it’s not obvious and still doesn’t account for the exactly guesses theory.

Great book!
I really enjoyed this book. My only criticism would be that at times it just gets a little bit too weird. But it still kept me engrossed from start to finish.
