Summary
Evil Eye garnered an Audie Award for Original Work in 2020.
Usha is convinced that the Evil Eye, a curse that brings continuous misfortune, was cast upon her daughter, Pallavi, in the womb. What else could have possibly left her driven, career-oriented daughter edging closer and closer to 30 without a prospective husband? Determined to set Pallavi on the right path, Usha arranges date after date with potential suitors - but after yet another setup fails, it seems her efforts are proving fruitless. But in an unexpected turn of events, Pallavi becomes her own matchmaker when she meets - and quickly falls for - Sandeep, a young Indian-American entrepreneur. And though she expects her mother will be elated with her finally finding a man, Pallavi is distraught and confused to find her mother growing increasingly suspicious of Sandeep’s motives...and his true identity.
Told through a series of phone calls and voicemails, this Audible Original penned by award-winning rising star playwright Madhuri Shekar transitions seamlessly from a light-hearted family dramedy to an unexpectedly supernatural thriller. With an endearing cast of well-rounded characters, sharp, natural dialogue, and a shocking edge-of-your-seat climax, Evil Eye is a can’t-miss tale about cultural miscommunications, family secrets, and the lingering echoes of trauma.
Playwright Madhuri Shekar was awarded a commission through the Audible Emerging Playwrights Fund, an initiative dedicated to developing innovative original plays driven by language and voice. As an Audible commissioned playwright, she received funding and creative support to develop Evil Eye.
Please note: This audio contains strong language, distressing situations, and descriptions of abuse and violence that some listeners may find upsetting. Discretion is advised.

Thoroughly nice surprise
A very nice audio drama, perfect for a short car journey.
I picked this up to trial a few of the included books, and was glad I did it's not my usual style of book but the twists and turns had me gripped right up to the end of the story.
I don't write many reviews but off the back of this one thought I would put my recommendation in.

Lots of humour, even more tension
Really well performed story that keeps you on edge, even as you enjoy the humour in the fantastic dialogue. The mother and daughter interchanges are riveting. Great book!

Amazing !!
One of the best stories I've ever listened to. it was like watching a movie. Very creative and compelling.
I loved the characters and the narrators. I especially loved Usha's character and the woman whose voice was used. She reminds me of my mother. The only criticism I have is that the voice of Sandeep wasn't convincing enough.
Other than that, everything else was perfect.

5 stars plus for another fantastic to courtesy of Audible once again. I love being a member. So many great short stories of you want a break from a 12 hour title and to try something different. Finding all these amazing new authors and impressive narrator help this along also. Would love to give ten stars to this on if I could! **********

A very cleverlly written crescendo.
This story begins as a typical long distance almost comedic phone relationship between a traditional Indian mother and her western daughter. Over a series of phone conversations it smoothly builds into an excellent spooky horror. This may be the best example of this type of story I have ever heard. An excellent story.
