Summary
These are the qualities that mark people who excel in life, whose relationships flourish, who are stars in the workplace. Lack of emotional intelligence can sabotage the intellect and ruin careers. Perhaps the greatest toll is on children, for whom risks include depression, eating disorders, unwanted pregnancies, aggressiveness, and crime. But the news is hopeful. Emotional intelligence is not fixed at birth, and the author shows how its vital qualities can be nurtured and strengthened in all of us. And because the emotional lessons a child learns actually sculpt the brain's circuitry, he provides guidance as to how parents and schools can best use this window of opportunity in childhood. The message of this eye-opening program is one we must take to heart: the true "bell-curve" for a democracy must measure emotional intelligence.
Critic reviews
"An intriguing and practical guide to emotional mastery." (Publishers Weekly)
"Excellent research, clear writing, and a fluid abridgment will please both the casual and serious student of how people combine emotions and thinking in daily functioning." (AudioFile)

Brilliant!
A convincing argument for the benefits of teaching emotional intelligence and it's positive affects on all aspects of life. It conveys what EI actually is, and has inspired some conversations with my children about how they are feeling and I am chomping at the bit to teach them more; I am now looking for more of a 'how to' book with practical exercises to use on my children. One will especially benefit from it more than the other, who is more naturally in tune with others' feelings and always has been. I now have a lot more hope for the other one!

What we need more than ever now
Simple, eloquent and easy to understand.
I have listened to this program three time in the space of two weeks.
It has helped me to at the very least, recognise, that when life’s “provocations” turn up, that’s an opportunity to ‘rise with the tide’

Excellent summary
Superb resource, well recorded, plenty of good stuff, probably enough for most people...may try to get round to listening to the full book sometime.

Disorganised
Good content but it’s not structured well. It jumps from one topic to a different one which makes it hard to remember the previous points...

Dated and sexist
There's some useful info in here but it feels like it was published in the 1950s. There's a lot of talk about how men and women behave in a marriage which is not supported by any evidence and totally ignores the possibility of non hetero relationships. Similarly the stuff on how girls and boys are different doesn't look at the role of culture in socialising children and just asserts that they behave in stereotypically gendered ways. If a book can be this narrow minded it suggests a lack of critical reasoning on the part of the author so how can we trust any of it?
