Summary

Compassionate, biblical, and thought-provoking, Embodied is an accessible guide for Christians who want help navigating issues related to transgenderism.

Preston Sprinkle draws on Scripture as well as real-life stories of individuals struggling with gender dysphoria to help listeners understand the complexities and emotions of this highly relevant topic. With careful research and an engaging style, Embodied explores:

  • What it means to be transgender, nonbinary, and gender-queer, and how these identities relate to being male or female
  • Why most stereotypes about what it means to be a man and woman comes from the culture and not the Bible
  • What the Bible says about humans created in God’s image as male and female, and how this relates to transgender experiences
  • Moral questions surrounding medical interventions such as sex reassignment surgery
  • Which pronouns to use and how to navigate the bathroom debate
  • Why more and more teens are questioning their gender

Written for Christian leaders, pastors, and parents, Embodied fills the great need for Christians to speak into the confusing and emotionally charged questions surrounding the transgender conversation.

Gentle, nuanced and eye-opening

Thank you Preston for writing such a loving and honest book. It’s really softened my heart to the trans issue and made me realise the nuance of the issue beyond loud trans activism. Recommend this book to anyone who wants know how to best love and care for the trans community without abandoning the Bible.

Thoughtfully considered and presented

We’ll thought through and sensitively presented. Would recommend as good place to start in thinking through how to support transgender people as a Christian.

An American perspective, largely superficial overview of the authors thoughts

I felt the majority of this book was largely superficial, especially with regards to any well thought through discussion on specific biblical theology regarding gender. I was disappointed that the individual personal experience that were recounted appeared to be the fundamental basis on which the author appears to place his theological understanding on this subject. Of course, our actions must absolutely demonstrate compassion and love towards each individual but in my opinion the compassion the author portrays unfortunately comes across as an almost self-impressed attitude rather than pointing the reader to Jesus, the source of all compassion. It was not overly clear why the author included descriptive portrayals of surgical interventions, naming all elements of genitalia. It was unclear on the way by which the author accepted the definition of gender dysphoria, this term was not at all adequately explored and the rest of the authors thoughts appeared to be based on this, which was why I felt that the arguments and perspectives ended up feeling superficial.
