About this listen

For fans of the Netflix series The Crown and from the New York Times best-selling author of 17 Carnations comes a captivating biography of Queen Elizabeth II and her sister Margaret.

They were the closest of sisters and the best of friends. But when, in a quixotic twist of fate, their uncle Edward Vlll decided to abdicate the throne, the dynamic between Elizabeth and Margaret was dramatically altered. Forever more Margaret would have to curtsey to the sister she called 'Lillibet'. And bow to her wishes.

Elizabeth would always look upon her younger sister's antics with a kind of stoical amusement, but Margaret's struggle to find a place and position inside the royal system - and her fraught relationship with its expectations - was often a source of tension. Famously, the queen had to inform Margaret that the church and government would not countenance her marrying a divorcee, Group Captain Peter Townsend, forcing Margaret to choose between keeping her title and royal allowances or her divorcee lover.

From the idyll of their cloistered early life, through their hidden war-time lives, into the divergent paths they took following their father's death and Elizabeth's ascension to the throne, this book explores their relationship over the years. Andrew Morton's latest biography offers unique insight into these two drastically different sisters - one resigned to duty and responsibility, the other resistant to it - and the lasting impact they have had on the Crown, the royal family and the ways it adapted to the changing mores of the 20th century.

Rehash of his book on Elizabeth II

Disappointed that so much was a direct lift from his book n Queen Elizabeth II - while I appreciate that the same events and issues are being discussed, the phrasing is exactly the same

What?

There is nothing here we haven’t heard before. The book was spoiled for me by the dreadful narration. Weird pauses and so many mispronunciations m, eg Austin Martin - never heard of it. In addition, when did Prince Phillip join the US Navy? According to the narrator he was a Loo-tenant! Disgraceful.

Couldn't listen

The narrator ruined this book from the very start, the very strange way her words flowed was unnatural and took all of my attention from the story

A very interesting story ruined by poor narration

This audiobook should have a higher rating, as Andrew Morton has written a thoughtful and dispassionate account of the two royal sisters. However, the breathy, theatrical narration with countless mispronouciations and inflections all over the place made it quite challenging to listen to. Do persist, only because it's a fascinating story with depth. sympathy and nuance.

Great writing, awful narration

Really interesting account of Elizabeth & Margaret, detailing familiar events of their lives but focusing specifically on how it affected their relationship. It felt well balanced and insightful, and I found myself seeing Margaret in a new light by the end of it.

I wish it hadn’t been such a struggle to battle through the ridiculous narration though. I don’t know what the production team were thinking when they allowed this melodramatic style (‘breathy-breathy-breathy harsh-harsh-harsh’ rhythm in EVERY sentence) to continue all the way through the book.

Appalling production of this audiobook

The actual book itself isn’t bad at all. It focusses on Margaret but it was interesting and well researched. What spoils the book is the appalling production where some words appear to have been sped up.

How on earth this passed quality control checks I’ll never know. If I had paid for the book, I would have returned it immediately. Shocking. shoddy amateurish production. It’s a shame as I think the narration was probably decent before it was produced and edited. What a shame as it ruins the listening experience. I finished the book but it was hard work to get to the end with the appalling production.

Dreadful

I can't go on with this, the narrator should find another job, awful choice

Old news

I like a mid century memoir but nothing we haven’t heard before. Pronunciation of ‘Daimler’ and ‘lieutenant’ incorrectly was irritating.

Ruined by narrator

Moreton tells a good tale but what ever is wrong with this narrator? Her delivery moves from from incisive and nasal assault to gentle and lilting all within a single sentence. It drove me nuts. I had to listen in stages to get to the end.
